The recent crackdown on PTI supporters in Islamabad has left the party at a critical juncture. After a night raid by security forces, PTI’s leadership now faces tough questions about its future strategy. This setback not only raises doubts about the party’s resilience but also puts the government under scrutiny.

Protest Dispersed Amid Chaos

On November 26, PTI supporters marched into Islamabad to demand the release of their leader, Imran Khan, imprisoned since August 2023. Bushra Bibi, Khan’s wife, urged the crowd to stay until he was freed. However, within hours, security forces launched a surprise midnight operation under a power blackout. Tear gas filled the air as protesters scattered. By dawn, PTI called off the protest, citing casualties among both supporters and security forces.

Unmet Demands and Leadership Under Pressure

PTI aimed to reclaim what it calls a “stolen mandate” from February’s elections, release political prisoners, and reverse a controversial judicial amendment. Despite the massive turnout, none of these demands were met. Political analysts believe the swift collapse of the protest marks a major blow to PTI’s strategy. Zaigham Khan, a political analyst, noted, “PTI’s ‘final call’ failed, weakening its stance moving forward.”

Conflicting Reports of Violence

The crackdown led to conflicting reports. PTI claimed eight of its supporters died, while the government denied using live ammunition. Officials reported that three paramilitary personnel were killed by a PTI convoy, and a police constable died during clashes. Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi accused PTI supporters of carrying weapons, while PTI leaders condemned the government’s excessive force.

Leadership Retreat Sparks Criticism

Bushra Bibi and senior PTI leader Ali Amin Gandapur retreated to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa during the raid, drawing criticism for abandoning protesters. Political analyst Ahmed Ijaz argued this retreat deepened internal divisions, stating, “Their departure from D-Chowk weakened the party’s ability to regroup.” The lack of leadership on the ground has further eroded confidence among PTI supporters.

Recalibrating the Path Forward

With its fourth protest in four months ending prematurely, PTI now faces the challenge of redefining its strategy. Benazir Shah, a political analyst, suggests PTI should consider forming alliances with other parties and social movements. “A unified front focused on broader issues like human rights could revive national momentum,” she said. However, for now, another large-scale protest seems unlikely.

Government’s Heavy-Handed Approach Under Fire

While PTI struggles to regroup, the government’s handling of the protest has also drawn criticism. The aggressive crackdown, intended to deter future demonstrations, risks backfiring. “The forceful approach could ignite further unrest,” Shah warned. This incident highlights the government’s inability to engage in dialogue, raising concerns about its legitimacy following allegations of election rigging.

PTI’s Next Steps

The PTI must now address internal divisions, restore public trust, and refine its tactics. Whether through political alliances or a renewed focus on social issues, the party needs a clear plan. Meanwhile, the government’s credibility hangs in the balance, leaving both sides under immense pressure as Pakistan navigates this turbulent political landscape.
