After the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s government and the rebels’ takeover of Damascus and other areas in Syria, harrowing stories of former prisoners are coming to light. According to an Al Jazeera report, thousands of individuals freed from prisons are now sharing their experiences of imprisonment.
Prisoners Identified Only by Numbers
A former prisoner, in a viral video verified by Al Jazeera, revealed, “In prison, I had no name, just a number. The Assad government detained me, and my family believed I was dead.”
The young man further shared that many individuals were imprisoned without informing their families, and they spent years behind bars.
Freed Moments Before Execution
Some former prisoners disclosed that they were freed just moments before their scheduled executions. One man said, “Fifty-four of us were supposed to be executed today, just 30 minutes ago. But now we are free, standing in the heart of Damascus.”

Freedom After 39 Years
Another prisoner, Ali Hassan, was freed after 39 years of imprisonment. He was arrested by Syrian forces in 1986 at a checkpoint in northern Lebanon. At the time of his arrest, he was an 18-year-old university student. His family had no information about his whereabouts after his detention.
Appeal for Underground Cell Codes
Authorities have made a social media appeal, urging prison staff and workers under the Assad regime to provide electronic codes for underground cells. These codes are vital for freeing nearly 100,000 detainees visible on CCTV cameras inside the prisons.
