The Senate Standing Committee on Power, led by Senator Mohsin Aziz, convened to address critical issues related to K-Electric, including persistent complaints about load-shedding and billing irregularities. The session, based on an agenda referred by the Senate, aimed to assess K-Electric’s efforts to resolve public concerns.

Senator Masroor Ahsan expressed his satisfaction during the meeting, sharing that his personal case with K-Electric had been resolved. He appreciated the ongoing dialogue with K-Electric, which he said has yielded positive progress in addressing complaints.
K-Electric Highlights Achievements
K-Electric’s Chief Distribution Officer, Sadia Dada, provided an overview of the company’s performance. She revealed that 70% of K-Electric’s jurisdiction is now exempt from load-shedding. Additionally, uninterrupted power is being supplied to all industrial zones. Out of approximately 2,100 feeders, more than 1,500 are load-shedding-free.

However, Dada acknowledged that electricity theft and unpaid bills remain significant hurdles. She explained that the privatization of K-Electric in 2005 helped reduce losses from 34% to nearly half, largely due to substantial investments. A new investment plan submitted to NEPRA is expected to resolve 96% of load-shedding issues once implemented.
To combat electricity theft, K-Electric has initiated efforts to replace outdated wires and counter the widespread kunda culture. These measures aim to improve service delivery and reduce losses further.
Committee’s Positive Feedback
The committee chairman commended K-Electric for its substantial improvements. Senator Mohsin Aziz remarked, “The information presented today paints a picture in complete contrast to what is usually portrayed about K-Electric.” He acknowledged the reduction in losses and called for continued focus on resolving the remaining challenges.
