Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz announced a groundbreaking initiative to combat Punjab’s escalating smog crisis by forming a joint working group with China. Speaking at a climate change session in Shanghai, she emphasized the importance of adopting China’s innovative approach to tackling environmental challenges. This partnership, coined the Beijing-Lahore working group, aims to revolutionize environmental policies and create a cleaner, greener Punjab.
Collaborative Approach to Environmental Pollution
The proposed working group will focus on five core areas: knowledge sharing, policy making, capacity building, data exchange, and technology transfer. It aims to reduce carbon emissions through green urban planning, renewable energy adoption, and expanding e-transport systems. Highlighting China’s advancements, CM Maryam referred to them as a model for developing countries like Pakistan.
“China has shown the world how economic growth and environmental sustainability can coexist. Their success in controlling air pollution is truly inspiring,” she said.

Learning from China’s Environmental Success
During her visit to the Blue Tech Clean Air Alliance, CM Maryam gained insights into China’s comprehensive anti-smog strategies. She acknowledged China’s transformation in infrastructure, skilled workforce, and industrial development, stating that these advancements serve as a beacon of hope for Pakistan.
Maryam highlighted that Punjab’s smog problem has reached critical levels. However, inspired by China’s efficient measures, she pledged to implement a mix of short, medium, and long-term strategies. These strategies will effectively the smog crisis in Punjab.
Steps Taken to Address Smog in Punjab
Punjab’s government has already initiated eco-friendly reforms across key sectors. In agriculture, traditional methods are being replaced with modern e-mechanization techniques. These innovative practices aim to reduce crop residue burning, a major contributor to smog.
In the transport sector, e-vehicles and improved public transportation systems are being introduced to curb emissions. The industrial sector is also undergoing transformation, with industries relocating outside urban areas to reduce urban pollution.
Green Punjab Initiative
Maryam reiterated her administration’s commitment to making Punjab more environmentally resilient. “We are implementing a comprehensive climate change agenda,” she said, noting that the province’s progress aligns with President Xi Jinping’s vision of shared global prosperity.
Punjab is adopting a phased approach to eliminate smog. Immediate actions target critical pollution sources, while medium and long-term plans focus on sustainable urban development and energy transitions.
