Tiffany Boone, the actress who portrays young Sarabi in Disney’s Mufasa: The Lion King, shared her journey of embodying the iconic future queen. The keyword “young Sarabi’s complexity” defines her creative process in breathing life into the character. Boone embraced the opportunity to explore Sarabi’s backstory, adding depth and personality to the beloved lioness.

The Surprise Role

Boone revealed that she initially didn’t know she was auditioning for Sarabi. The casting process kept the character’s identity a secret, and she created her interpretation based on what was provided. “I created the character that was in my head,” Boone said. “I didn’t know I was auditioning for Sarabi. It had a different name on the page. So I was like, ‘This must be some new character.’”

The reveal came as a surprise and a challenge. “When they told me who I was actually playing, I was like, ‘Oh, that’s quite a bit of pressure, actually,’” she admitted.

Creative Freedom Under Barry Jenkins

Working with director Barry Jenkins provided Boone with the freedom to develop Sarabi’s younger version. Jenkins encouraged Boone to add layers of complexity and personality to the character. “I had so much freedom to create the younger version of her and give the other layers to the character [and] the challenges that she went through to become the great queen that she becomes,” Boone shared.

This creative latitude allowed Boone to explore Sarabi’s imperfections. She described the young lioness as “sassy, sarcastic, and someone who makes fun of the boys.” Boone also highlighted Sarabi’s humor and vulnerability, traits that add depth to her transformation into a revered leader.

Adding Depth to Sarabi

Boone emphasized that Sarabi’s journey wasn’t one of perfection. “She wasn’t always perfect. She’s sassy … she’s sarcastic and she makes fun of the boys,” Boone explained. “I think she has a sense of humor about her. She’s really vulnerable, and all those things are really fun to add to the complexity of the Sarabi that we see later on.”

By showcasing Sarabi’s personality and struggles, Boone gives audiences a richer understanding of the lioness who would later become queen. Her portrayal bridges the gap between the playful, determined youth and the wise, regal leader seen in the original The Lion King.

A Star-Studded Cast

Mufasa: The Lion King boasts an impressive cast, including Beyoncé, Blue Ivy Carter, Aaron Pierre, Donald Glover, John Kani, and more. Boone’s role as young Sarabi adds to the movie’s narrative richness, providing audiences with a deeper appreciation for the characters they’ve come to love.

Tiffany Boone’s performance as young Sarabi promises to bring a fresh perspective to the character, blending humor, vulnerability, and strength. Her portrayal highlights Sarabi’s growth and sets the stage for her journey to becoming the iconic queen of Pride Rock.
