Bangladesh is waiting for India’s reply regarding the extradition of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Despite a formal request, India has yet to respond.

The Bangladeshi foreign ministry confirmed it sent an official extradition request. Spokesperson Mohammed Rafiqul Alam said a diplomatic note was sent to India on December 23. However, he admitted that there is no definite timeline for the process.

Alam stated, “If India does not respond within an appropriate period, Bangladesh will issue a note of urgency.” He declined to comment further, saying the government prefers to wait for India’s response.

Urgency Note May Follow Delay

The foreign ministry emphasized its willingness to wait for a reasonable time. Officials warned that Bangladesh would issue a “note of urgency” if India continues to delay. Alam reaffirmed that the government remains patient but prepared for further diplomatic measures if necessary.

No Fixed Timeline for Extradition

Alam clarified that there is no set timeframe for extradition agreements between the two countries. He added that Bangladesh would follow international diplomatic procedures to ensure Sheikh Hasina’s return.

Controversy Over Spokesperson’s Social Media Post

Amid these developments, protests erupted over a Facebook post by Mohammed Rafiqul Alam. His post reportedly criticized India and referred to annexation. Deputy Press Secretary Apoorva Jehangir distanced the government from Alam’s comments.

Jehangir said the post reflected Alam’s personal views. “The interim government does not endorse such statements,” he explained.

India’s Silence Raises Questions

India’s lack of response has raised questions in both countries. Analysts believe the situation could strain diplomatic relations. Sheikh Hasina’s extradition remains a sensitive issue, and both nations are under pressure to resolve it amicably.

Next Steps

Bangladesh plans to wait before taking further steps. The government hopes India will respond positively to its request. Meanwhile, protests over Alam’s social media post add another layer of tension to the issue.

For now, the diplomatic standoff continues as Bangladesh waits for India’s reply.
