Israeli forces conducted a deadly raid on the Nur Shams refugee camp near Tulkarm in the occupied West Bank, killing at least eight Palestinians, according to local and Israeli officials. The operation, which escalated tensions in the region, involved airstrikes, shelling, and arrests. The raid marks another significant incident in the ongoing conflict, leaving the refugee camp in devastation.
Casualties and Damage
The Palestinian Health Ministry confirmed eight deaths following the raid. Among the victims were 53-year-old Khawla Abdo, who died in early shelling, and 18-year-old Fathi Saeed Odeh Salem, who succumbed to gunshot wounds to his abdomen and chest. Another woman died later in the day due to injuries sustained in the attack.
Hamas’ armed wing, the al-Qassam Brigades, reported that two of its members were killed in the raid. Meanwhile, the Israeli military said it killed one individual during what it called a “counter-terrorism” operation and detained 18 others. They also confiscated a cache of weapons.
The raid also caused extensive physical damage. Bulldozers destroyed homes, shops, and sections of the camp’s water network, as well as parts of the walls of the Al-Salam Mosque, which was barricaded off by Israeli forces.
Military Engagement and Airstrikes
The Israeli military reported that one of its commanders was moderately injured when an explosive device struck his vehicle during the operation. Late Tuesday, Israeli aircraft targeted armed militants in the camp, adding to the violence.
The military justified its actions as necessary for counter-terrorism, but the destruction and loss of life have drawn condemnation from Palestinian officials.

Obstruction of Medical Aid
The official Palestinian news agency, WAFA, reported that Israeli forces blocked ambulances from reaching Salem and other victims during the raid. Medics faced gunfire as they attempted to provide aid, exacerbating the humanitarian impact of the operation.
Widening Conflict
Since October 7, 2023, the conflict in the West Bank has intensified, with hundreds of Palestinians and dozens of Israelis killed. The Nur Shams raid highlights the deepening violence in the region, as both sides endure losses and escalating tensions.
Regional and Global Implications
The ongoing violence raises concerns about further destabilization in the region. The international community has repeatedly called for measures to de-escalate the conflict, but raids like this underscore the difficulty of achieving peace. The destruction of critical infrastructure and the targeting of civilian areas further complicate efforts for reconciliation.
As the conflict continues, the toll on human lives and communities remains devastating. The Nur Shams raid is another grim reminder of the urgent need for dialogue and resolution in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
