The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) arrested an officer for allegedly accepting a $2,000 bribe from Romanian technicians aboard a foreign vessel at Port Qasim. The accused, former FIA Immigration in-charge ASI Attaullah Memon, and his colleague Zohaib, initially demanded $4,000. However, they later settled for $2,000.

The technicians had traveled from India’s Mundra Port to Port Qasim for maintenance work. Under international immigration laws, they are allowed to work without clearance delays. However, the FIA officers allegedly demanded the bribe to allow the technicians to continue their work.

Investigation Into Wider Bribery Racket

The arrest has sparked concerns about a larger bribery racket involving FIA officials at the port. Sources suggest that this incident is not an isolated case, with other officials potentially involved in similar corrupt activities. Investigations are currently underway to uncover the full extent of the alleged bribery network and hold accountable all individuals implicated in the wrongdoing.

The FIA has expressed its commitment to cracking down on corruption and has vowed to take strict action against any personnel found guilty of misconduct. The agency has initiated an internal investigation to ensure transparency and restore public trust in its operations.

Wider Implications for Port Security and Accountability

This case highlights the challenges of maintaining accountability and transparency in key sectors like customs and immigration. The FIA’s role in overseeing clearance processes at ports is crucial to ensuring national security and smooth international trade. Corruption in such critical areas undermines the integrity of the system and damages Pakistan’s reputation on the global stage.

The ongoing investigation could impact port security, with calls for stronger oversight and stricter anti-corruption measures. Authorities are expected to take further action to address systemic issues within the FIA.
