A significant milestone in Karachi’s infrastructure development has been achieved with the opening of a 9.1-kilometre section of the Malir Expressway.

The Opening Ceremony and Inauguration

On January 11, 2025, the partial section of the Malir Expressway, stretching from Qayyumabad to Shah Faisal, was officially opened. The ceremony was attended by PPP leaders, including Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah, along with other senior officials.

A Vital Development for Karachi’s Traffic Relief

Once completed, it will serve as a major alternative route to Shahrah-e-Faisal, one of the city’s busiest thoroughfares. The expressway will also connect directly to industrial zones and integrate into the city’s existing road network, easing traffic on congested roads.

Project Costs and Funding

The Malir Expressway is a significant undertaking, with an estimated cost of 55 billion rupees.

This collaboration underscores the importance of public-private partnerships in addressing Karachi’s infrastructural challenges. The Malir Expressway is one of the largest such projects in the province and in the country.

Future of the Malir Expressway

It will begin at Korangi Creek Avenue and extend all the way to the Malir River, linking to the Karachi-Hyderabad Motorway (M-9) near Kathore. This route will significantly reduce traffic on existing urban roads, helping to alleviate congestion in Karachi’s growing population.

By improving access to industrial areas, the expressway will not only ease commuting but also boost economic activity. Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah emphasized that the fully operational expressway will play a key role in driving regional economic growth.

Impact on Karachi’s Economy

Once complete, the Malir Expressway will serve as a vital economic corridor. With direct connections to Karachi’s industrial zones, it will improve logistics and supply chain efficiency. Businesses operating in the region will benefit from faster transportation, contributing to Karachi’s economic development.

The project also promises to improve quality of life for residents, with reduced traffic times and smoother commutes.
