Delays and Postponements

The decision on the reference, initially reserved on December 18, 2024, has faced multiple delays. The court had set December 23 for the verdict, but that date passed without a decision. Another date, January 6, was also missed, followed by January 13. Despite these setbacks, the case is now scheduled for today. This case has drawn significant attention due to its impact on the political landscape and the high-profile individuals involved.

Background of the Case

The 190 million pounds reference revolves around alleged illegal actions involving Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi. The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) arrested Imran Khan in November 2023, initiating a lengthy trial. The reference alleges that the couple engaged in corrupt practices to facilitate the transfer of the 190 million pounds to Pakistan. It is claimed that the funds were linked to a secret deal with a property tycoon, finalized using Imran Khan’s influence.

The investigation has been thorough, involving over 100 hearings. NAB presented a list of 59 witnesses, with 35 giving testimony. Key figures, such as former principal secretary Azam Khan and former Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Pervez Khattak, appeared as witnesses in the case. However, six individuals, including Zulfi Bukhari and Farhat Shehzadi, were declared absconders by the court.

Imran Khan’s defense team has argued that the case is politically motivated. They have repeatedly challenged the validity of the charges, although the court has proceeded with the hearings. During the trial, Imran Khan submitted a list of 16 potential witnesses, but the court rejected their testimony.

The verdict will have far-reaching consequences, not only for the PTI leadership but also for the political dynamics in Pakistan. As the court hears the final arguments, the nation waits for clarity on the outcome of this highly anticipated case.
