Karachi experienced a massive power breakdown on Sunday, plunging several areas into darkness due to a fault in an Extra High Tension (EHT) line. The disruption affected over 400 feeders across 23 grid stations, halting electricity supply in major parts of the city.
Cause of the Breakdown
The power outage began at 11 AM when the EHT line tripped, leading to widespread disruptions. According to K-Electric, the city’s main electricity provider, the fault originated in the high-tension line. This issue immediately impacted power grids across Karachi, cutting off electricity in residential and commercial areas alike.

Areas Affected
Several prominent localities, including Bilal Town, Airport, Garden, North Karachi, Jacob Line, Jail Road, Orangi, Mehmoodabad, Korangi East, DHA, and Old Golimar, experienced power outages. Other areas such as Korangi South, SITE, Clifton, and Lasbela were also affected.
The sudden loss of electricity caused significant inconvenience to residents and businesses, especially in densely populated areas like North Karachi and Orangi.
K-Electric’s Response
K-Electric acted swiftly to address the situation. Their spokesperson confirmed that technical teams began work immediately to resolve the issue. While power restoration efforts started promptly, some areas endured prolonged outages due to the severity of the fault.
Despite the scale of the disruption, K-Electric assured citizens that the problem was temporary. “The fault has been addressed, and we are working to restore power supply to all affected areas,” the spokesperson said.
Restoration Efforts
It took approximately two hours for the restoration process to gain momentum. Gradual progress allowed power to return to most areas of the city within a short timeframe. By the afternoon, electricity was fully restored to affected localities such as Lasbela and Bilal Town.
K-Electric’s timely response and technical expertise ensured the system returned to normal operations. By the end of the day, power supply across Karachi had been fully stabilized.
Impact and Challenges
While power outages are not uncommon in Karachi, the scale of Sunday’s breakdown posed a significant challenge. Residents faced disruptions to daily activities, and businesses experienced operational setbacks. Prolonged outages in specific areas underscored the importance of modernizing infrastructure to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Moving Forward
Sunday’s power breakdown highlights Karachi’s vulnerability to transmission line faults and the urgent need for system upgrades. Though K-Electric managed to resolve the issue promptly, improving the resilience of the power supply system remains critical to ensuring uninterrupted service for the city’s growing population.
With restoration complete, Karachi’s electricity supply has returned to normal. However, residents and businesses alike hope for long-term solutions to minimize the frequency and impact of such breakdowns.
