KARACHI: Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) is facing a major staffing crisis following the resignation of 110 engineers and technicians. The departures come amidst the government’s move to privatize the national flag carrier.
In response to the resignations, PIA’s administration has decided to fill the vacant positions on a daily-wage basis. According to sources, the engineering department has already started conducting interviews for contractual appointments of engineers and technicians.
The hiring process for aircraft engineers remains undecided. Sources revealed that the last recruitment for aircraft engineers was conducted in 2016.
UK Delegation Reviews Aviation Safety
In a related development, a British delegation arrived in Pakistan to assess the country’s aviation safety standards. The team comprises representatives from the UK Department for Transport and the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA).
This review is a critical step towards resuming flight operations between Pakistan and the UK. The Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority (PCAA) is hosting the delegation, with Director-General Nadir Shafi Dar leading the discussions.
Controversy Over PIA’s Paris Flights
Separately, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has ordered an investigation into a controversial advertisement related to the launch of PIA’s Paris flights. Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar shared this directive during a Senate session focused on PIA’s privatization.
PIA’s ongoing challenges with staffing and its privatization plans have created uncertainty for the airline. The outcome of the UK delegation’s safety assessment and the recruitment of engineers will play a crucial role in shaping the airline’s future.
