ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Wednesday raised objections to appeals filed by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi against the verdict in the £190 million case. The registrar’s office returned the pleas, citing several concerns.

The objections included the absence of a certificate confirming that the case is not being heard in another court. Additionally, some pages of the appeals were unsigned. The petitioners have been directed to address these issues before resubmitting the pleas.

PTI Leaders Challenge Verdict

Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi had moved the IHC seeking acquittal from the accountability court’s verdict. The court had sentenced Imran Khan to 14 years in jail and Bushra Bibi to seven years. The petitioners accused the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) of misusing its powers and claimed the verdict was announced in haste without a thorough investigation.

Khan alleged that the NAB failed to acquire the Al-Qadir Trust case deed and did not include the UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA) in the investigation. He argued that these omissions undermined the case’s legitimacy.

The Rawalpindi accountability court, under Judge Nasir Javed Rana, sentenced the couple and imposed fines—Rs 1 million on Imran Khan and Rs 500,000 on Bushra Bibi. Additionally, the court ordered the government to take Al-Qadir University into its custody.

Al-Qadir University Case Details

The NAB accused Imran Khan and his associates of illegally acquiring vast tracts of land under the name of Al-Qadir University Trust, allegedly causing a loss of £190 million to the national exchequer.

The charges claim that Imran Khan and others adjusted Rs 50 billion—equivalent to £190 million at the time—sent by Britain’s National Crime Agency (NCA) to Pakistan’s government. NAB filed a corruption reference against Imran Khan, Bushra Bibi, and seven others regarding the Al-Qadir University case.
