The Sindh government has announced a sharp increase in bus fares for the Peoples Bus Service in Karachi, adding financial strain to daily commuters. The new fare structure significantly impacts those who rely on public transport for work, education, and daily travel.
Major Fare Hike Announced
Under the revised fare policy, passengers traveling less than 15 kilometers will now pay Rs80, up from Rs50. For distances beyond 15 kilometers, the fare has surged to Rs120 per trip. This sudden increase has sparked frustration among Karachi residents, who are already struggling with rising living costs.
Impact on Daily Commuters
The fare hike is a major setback for office workers, students, and laborers who use the Peoples Bus Service regularly. Many Karachiites have voiced their concerns, stating that wages have remained stagnant, while transport expenses continue to rise.
A daily commuter shared, “I take the bus every day to my workplace. With this increase, my monthly transport cost will rise significantly, making it harder to manage other expenses.”

Government’s Justification
Sindh’s Minister for Information and Transport, Sharjeel Inam Memon, defended the decision, stating that the government operates the bus service with good intentions. He highlighted that the government provides a daily subsidy of Rs5 million to keep the transport system running.
Memon also thanked the Sindh Cabinet and Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah for their support in maintaining the public transport network.
Public Outcry and Demand for Reversal
Despite the government’s justification, citizens remain unconvinced. Many believe that the fare hike will reduce affordability and accessibility for the common man. Several residents have urged the Sindh government to reconsider the decision, emphasizing that public transport should remain affordable for all.
With growing public frustration, it remains to be seen whether authorities will adjust the fares or introduce relief measures for affected passengers.
