Pakistan and China have agreed to bolster intelligence sharing to ensure enhanced security cooperation. This decision was made during a significant meeting between Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and his Chinese counterpart, Qi Yanjun, in Beijing. The discussions come amid rising security concerns, particularly involving the safety of Chinese personnel working in Pakistan.

Meeting of Security Officials

The meeting, held on Wednesday, was part of a broader diplomatic visit by President Asif Ali Zardari’s delegation to China. Naqvi, accompanied by senior Pakistani officials, met with Qi Yanjun to discuss measures to strengthen security and intelligence cooperation. The talks also addressed the escalating number of attacks targeting Chinese nationals in Pakistan, prompting China to urge Pakistan to formalize a joint security management system.

Key Areas of Focus

The discussion primarily revolved around Pakistan’s ongoing counter-terrorism efforts. Attacks on Chinese citizens, especially engineers, have led to increased concern.

Border Security and Technology Cooperation

Beyond intelligence sharing, the meeting also focused on securing the shared border between the two nations. Both countries recognized the importance of modern technology for improving the capabilities of police and paramilitary forces. The two ministers discussed acquiring cutting-edge equipment for the police force in Pakistan, with a focus on enhancing security at the border.

Furthermore, cooperation between Pakistan’s Islamabad Police and China’s Beijing Police was also highlighted. The two sides expressed a mutual desire to increase exchanges between their respective law enforcement agencies to promote better policing practices and enhanced security measures.

Collaborating on the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC)

In addition to security concerns, the two sides also reviewed progress on the second phase of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). Both nations reaffirmed their commitment to the continued development of CPEC, which is pivotal for both economic growth and strategic relations. They focused on key sectors such as industrialization, special economic zones, clean energy, and agriculture.

President Zardari, during his meeting with Zhao Leji, Chairman of the Standing Committee of China’s National People’s Congress, emphasized the importance of CPEC in promoting mutual development. Zhao agreed on the need to enhance cooperation in the areas of science and technology, renewable energy, and infrastructure.

Strengthening Bilateral Relations

Both leaders also stressed the role of strategic trust in the growing ties between the two countries. Pakistan and China continue to value their long-standing friendship and recognize the importance of high-level exchanges to reinforce this bond.
