China welcomed the Asian Winter Games with a dazzling opening ceremony in Harbin, where President Xi Jinping led the celebrations in freezing temperatures. Thousands of spectators filled the 10,000-capacity stadium to witness a spectacular show featuring digital snowflakes, virtual ski slopes, and illuminated performers. The event marked the return of the Games after an eight-year gap, bringing together 1,270 athletes from 34 countries and territories.
A Grand Opening with Global Leaders
Xi Jinping entered the stadium to roaring applause, accompanied by his wife and International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach. Other dignitaries, including China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi and leaders from Pakistan and Thailand, also attended. The energy in the arena was electric as each participating nation marched in the parade.
North Korea’s delegation entered under its flag, despite previous sanctions from the World Anti-Doping Agency. Meanwhile, the host nation, China, received the loudest ovation as its 170-athlete squad made its way into the arena. Spectators waved mini-Chinese flags while Xi stood and applauded.
