Pakistan is set to take a major step toward enhanced internet connectivity with the arrival of the Africa-1 submarine cable in Karachi. The high-capacity cable will make landfall at PTCL’s Sea View landing station on February 22, 2025, marking a key milestone in strengthening the country’s digital infrastructure.

A Game-Changing Investment

Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL) confirmed the development in a notice to the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX). The company described the project as a transformative initiative that will improve connectivity between Africa, the UAE, and Europe.

PTCL’s Board of Directors approved a $59.5 million investment for Africa-1 in November 2020. Since 2021, the company has been investing annually as part of its capital expenditure (CAPEX) plan.

The cable is scheduled to become fully operational in Q1 2026, when it will officially reach its Ready for Service (RFS) status. Once live, the project will begin generating revenue for PTCL and contribute to the growth of Pakistan’s digital economy.

Strengthening Internet Connectivity

The launch of Africa-1 comes at a crucial time, as Pakistan faces frequent internet disruptions. In conclusion these interruptions stem from cable faults, government-imposed restrictions, and technical failures.

To combat these challenges, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) is actively working to improve international connectivity.

A Step Toward Reliable Digital Infrastructure

Pakistan has been making significant strides in expanding its telecom infrastructure. In December 2024, PTA facilitated Transworld Associate (TWA) in bringing the 2Africa submarine cable to the country. This initiative further strengthened Pakistan’s international telecommunications network.
