Karachi Customs officials have foiled an attempt to smuggle live monkeys using forged documents. Authorities at the Collectorate of Customs Airports intercepted two consignments carrying 26 monkeys from South Africa after discovering that the No Objection Certificate (NOC) presented for clearance was fake. This case highlights the growing issue of wildlife smuggling and the use of counterfeit documents to bypass regulations.
Suspicious Documents Raise Alarm
The incident came to light on January 2, 2025, when Ovais Amin, representing M/s Khayal Enterprises, submitted paperwork to clear the consignments. The documents included an NOC dated December 23, 2024, and other export-related papers. However, customs officials found irregularities in the paperwork and decided to verify its authenticity.
As a result, customs detained the consignments, valued at $1,040 (approximately Rs. 291,000), and confiscated the fraudulent documents.

Legal Action Against the Accused
Authorities have identified Ovais Amin and another individual, Yasir Ahmed, as key suspects in the smuggling attempt. Both are accused of trying to clear the shipment using fraudulent documents. The case falls under Sections 16, 17, 32(1), and 32-A of the Customs Act, 1969, which cover violations related to customs fraud and forged documents.
Additionally, the accused could face penalties under the Import Policy Order, 2022, and the Import and Export Control Act, 1950. Customs officials have launched an investigation, and legal proceedings are expected to follow.
Authorities Tighten Regulations
The live monkeys remain in custody as authorities determine the next steps. Officials emphasize that wildlife smuggling poses a serious threat to conservation efforts and violates international regulations. This incident underscores the need for stricter monitoring and stronger enforcement to prevent similar smuggling attempts.
Customs authorities have vowed to tighten scrutiny on wildlife imports, ensuring that such illegal activities do not go unchecked. Enhanced verification processes and collaboration with relevant departments will play a crucial role in deterring future cases of animal trafficking.
