Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has issued a strong warning to Hamas, stating that the group will face “unimaginable consequences” if it does not release the remaining hostages held in Gaza. His remarks come as negotiations over a ceasefire extension have stalled, and Israel has blocked humanitarian aid to the region.

Hostage Crisis and Ceasefire Standoff

During a speech at the Israeli parliament, Netanyahu made it clear that Israel would escalate actions if Hamas did not comply. His warning follows the end of a six-week truce, during which 25 hostages were released in exchange for 1,800 Palestinian prisoners. However, 58 hostages remain in Gaza, with Israel claiming that 34 of them are deceased.

Early Sunday, Israel had agreed to extend the ceasefire until mid-April, a proposal reportedly backed by U.S. Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff. However, Hamas rejected the offer, insisting on transitioning to the next phase of negotiations, which could lead to a more permanent ceasefire.

Israel’s Pressure Strategy

Reports from Israeli media indicate that Netanyahu has developed a “maximum pressure” strategy to push Hamas into accepting an extension under Israel’s terms. Public broadcaster Kan reported that Israel might intensify measures against Hamas this week under a so-called “Hell Plan.”

The strategy includes:

  • Blocking humanitarian aid to Gaza
  • Forcing northern Gaza residents to move south
  • Halting electricity supply
  • Resuming full-scale military operations

Israeli newspaper Israel Hayom noted that while some of Netanyahu’s far-right allies favor immediate military action, the prime minister appears to be prioritizing hostage negotiations before considering a return to full-scale war.

Uncertain Future for Ceasefire Talks

With both sides refusing to compromise, the likelihood of renewed fighting is increasing. The humanitarian situation in Gaza is worsening due to the blockade on essential supplies, raising concerns among international organizations. Meanwhile, Israel remains firm in its stance, indicating that Hamas must release all hostages before any permanent truce is considered.

As tensions escalate, the coming days will be critical in determining whether diplomacy prevails or whether Israel follows through with its threats of severe retaliation.
