The Bannu Cantonment attack has sparked nationwide concern, with Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Asim Munir promising swift justice for its planners and facilitators. During his visit to Bannu, he assured that those behind the attack would be tracked down and punished, no matter where they were hiding.
Attack on Bannu Cantonment
On March 5, terrorists used two explosive-laden vehicles to breach the perimeter of Bannu Cantonment. The attack damaged nearby homes and a mosque. Security forces swiftly engaged the attackers, eliminating 16 terrorists, including four suicide bombers. However, five soldiers embraced martyrdom while defending the cantonment.
The next day, General Asim Munir visited Bannu to meet the injured and express condolences to the families of the victims. He reassured them that the military would relentlessly pursue all those involved in this heinous act.
Pakistan Accuses Afghanistan-Based Terrorists
Pakistan has blamed Afghanistan-based militants for orchestrating the attack. Intelligence reports confirm that the attackers received instructions from handlers across the border. The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) reported that Afghan nationals were directly involved, while foreign weapons were used in the assault.
The army chief condemned the barbaric targeting of civilians, including women and children, calling it proof of the terrorists’ true intentions. He emphasized that such actions expose them as enemies of Islam and peace.

Army’s Commitment to National Security
During his visit, General Munir commended the bravery and swift response of security forces in neutralizing the terrorists. Addressing the troops, he praised their dedication and assured them that the fight against terrorism would continue until every militant and their facilitator was eliminated.
He highlighted the Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) as a major threat, stating that they continue to operate from Afghanistan. He also stressed that Pakistan would not allow any entity to disrupt its peace and stability.
Government’s Response and Compensation for Victims
Following the attack, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government officials, including Health Minister Pakhtoon Yar Khan, visited the affected areas. They inspected the damaged mosque and homes and promised full reconstruction.
The minister met with the families of the martyrs, offering condolences and announcing compensation packages for their losses. A survey team has already assessed the damage, and financial aid will be provided soon.
He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring peace in Bannu and urged citizens to cooperate with security forces.
Pakistan’s Warning to Afghanistan
Pakistan has repeatedly urged the Afghan interim government to prevent its soil from being used by terrorists. However, Kabul has denied these allegations.
After the attack, the ISPR warned that Pakistan reserves the right to take necessary measures against cross-border terrorism. Officials stated that sanctuaries for militants in Afghanistan pose a direct threat to regional stability.
Unwavering Fight Against Terrorism
The Bannu attack is a stark reminder of the ongoing terrorist threats Pakistan faces. The military remains committed to eliminating these threats and ensuring national security. With the army chief’s firm stance and the government’s support for victims, Pakistan continues its fight against terrorism with full determination.
