Hamas Claims Trump’s Threats Undermine Gaza Ceasefire

Hamas ceasefire concerns have intensified after former U.S. President Donald Trump issued a stern ultimatum demanding the release of all hostages. The militant group accused Trump of encouraging Israel to abandon ceasefire negotiations and prolong the conflict in Gaza.
Hamas Blames Trump for Ceasefire Complications
Hamas spokesperson Hazem Qasim stated that Trump’s threats “complicate matters” and give Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu an excuse to delay implementing the ceasefire agreement. The fragile truce, brokered with U.S., Qatari, and Egyptian mediation, began on January 19. Since then, Hamas has exchanged 33 Israeli and five Thai hostages for 2,000 Palestinian detainees.
However, the second phase of the ceasefire negotiations has stalled. The first phase ended on Saturday, and Israeli officials have remained noncommittal about advancing discussions.
Trump’s Direct Message to Hamas
In a social media post, Trump warned Hamas: “Release all of the hostages now, not later, and immediately return all of the dead bodies of the people you murdered, or it is OVER for you.” He also urged Hamas leaders to flee Gaza while they still had a chance.
Trump’s message followed a White House meeting with former hostages. His administration has also confirmed direct negotiations with Hamas—marking a historic shift, as the U.S. has officially designated Hamas a terrorist organization since 1997.
Israel’s Reaction to U.S.-Hamas Talks
The Israeli government has been cautious in its response to the direct U.S.-Hamas negotiations. In a brief statement, Israeli officials confirmed they had shared their position with Washington. Some Israeli leaders, however, welcomed Trump’s stance.
Israel’s Consul General in New York, Ofir Akunis, told Fox News that Trump had shifted pressure from Israel to Hamas. “This is the right approach,” Akunis said, suggesting that forcing Hamas to act first could yield better results.
Ceasefire Standoff and Humanitarian Crisis
Hamas insists that a full ceasefire and Israel’s withdrawal from Gaza should be the next step. Israel, however, has tightened its blockade, preventing goods from entering Gaza while demanding the unconditional release of remaining hostages.
Aid agencies warn of worsening conditions, with over 48,000 civilians killed and widespread destruction across Gaza. Despite an increased flow of humanitarian aid in recent months, supplies remain insufficient.
Trump, addressing the people of Gaza directly, wrote: “A beautiful future awaits, but not if you hold hostages. If you do, you are DEAD!”
Netanyahu’s Political Calculations
Some analysts believe Netanyahu is reluctant to move forward with ceasefire talks. A lasting truce could weaken his political standing, as some Israeli factions demand a more aggressive approach against Hamas.
With Trump back in power, Netanyahu might also expect more favorable terms, including stronger U.S. support for military operations. Israel’s Foreign Minister Gideon Saar denied claims that Israel had violated the ceasefire, instead accusing Hamas of misusing aid.
The future of the ceasefire remains uncertain, with tensions rising on all sides.
