More than 50,000 Palestinians have lost their lives in Gaza since the start of Israel’s military offensive, according to the Hamas-run Gaza Health Ministry. This number represents about 2.1% of Gaza’s pre-war population, meaning one in every 46 people has been killed. In addition, over 113,000 individuals have suffered injuries.
Humanitarian Crisis Worsens
The war, which has resulted in widespread destruction, began after Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, 2023, killing about 1,200 people and taking 251 hostages. Israel responded with a massive military campaign, which has devastated homes, hospitals, and essential infrastructure in Gaza.
However, with international journalists restricted from entering Gaza independently, verification of exact casualty figures remains difficult.

High Civilian Casualties
According to the UN’s Human Rights Office, nearly 70% of the confirmed victims have been women and children. A study published in The Lancet medical journal in January suggested that the actual death toll could be up to 41% higher than the reported figures. The situation remains dire as airstrikes and ground operations continue.
Recent Escalation and Rising Toll
Despite international calls for a ceasefire, Israeli forces resumed military operations last Tuesday. In just the last 24 hours, at least 39 additional deaths have been reported, bringing the total number of people killed since Tuesday to 673.
As the war continues, Gaza faces one of the deadliest humanitarian crises in modern history. The global community remains divided over how to respond, while millions in Gaza struggle for survival amid relentless violence and devastation.
