Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah clarified that President Asif Ali Zardari did not approve any canal projects in a recent meeting.
Misrepresentation of Meeting Details
Speaking at a press conference in Karachi, Shah explained that President Zardari was only briefed on irrigation matters and additional land cultivation. However, incorrect meeting minutes led to speculation that new canals had been approved under his authority.
Water Shortage and IRSA’s Role
Shah highlighted Sindh’s ongoing water crisis, pointing out that a complete record of Indus River’s water shortage is available. However the Sindh government has formally challenged the certification issued by the Indus River System Authority (IRSA) in the CCI.
Shah made it clear that Sindh’s irrigation department is actively monitoring developments to prevent unauthorized construction.

“Our representative officially objected to these projects,” he said, reaffirming Sindh’s stance on water rights.
Ensuring Transparency in Water Management
The Sindh CM underscored the need for transparency in water management and fair distribution of resources among provinces. He urged the federal government to respect established protocols and involve all stakeholders before approving large-scale irrigation projects.
The controversy over canal approvals highlights the ongoing tensions over water distribution in Pakistan. In conclusion with Sindh firmly opposing unauthorized projects, the CCI’s role in resolving disputes will be crucial in the coming months.
