ISLAMABAD: The National Emergencies Operation Centre (NEOC) on Thursday issued a high-alert warning predicting heavy rainfall, strong windstorms, thunderstorms, and isolated hailstorms on Friday and Saturday evenings across various regions of Pakistan, including Rawalpindi and Islamabad.

This alert comes a day after at least three people lost their lives in Rawalpindi and Gujar Khan due to a sudden and intense hailstorm. The storm, accompanied by gusty winds and heavy rain, wreaked havoc on infrastructure. It caused severe damage to vehicles, shattered windscreens, destroyed solar panels, and triggered flash floods in several low-lying areas.

Weather Disruptions Likely Across the Potohar Region

The Associated Press of Pakistan (APP) reported that the Potohar region remains at high risk. A detailed advisory warned that strong winds and heavy rainfall could uproot trees and cause temporary power outages, posing risks to both public safety and infrastructure.

APP further highlighted that windstorms, dust storms, and hailstorms are likely to cause damage to vulnerable rooftops, vehicles, glass installations, and power lines.

Additionally, the possibility of reduced visibility due to rain and dust could significantly increase the risk of road accidents.

Public Safety Measures Urged

In light of the upcoming severe weather conditions, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has urged the public to take proactive precautions. Citizens are encouraged to:

  • Secure all loose objects around homes and businesses

  • Avoid unnecessary travel during storm activity

  • Stay indoors during peak weather conditions

  • Download the Pakistan NDMA Disaster Alert mobile app for real-time weather updates

Tourists and residents in affected areas are also advised to closely monitor weather updates through official sources only.

Travel Advisory and Safety Guidelines

Travellers should verify road conditions before starting their journey and postpone non-essential travel during heavy rainfall or storm warnings. Authorities particularly emphasized that people living near or in landslide-prone regions must exercise extra caution and strictly follow local safety instructions.

The NDMA stressed that timely access to verified information and immediate response to weather advisories are key to preventing loss of life and property during such events.
