In a major move to enhance regional air connectivity, Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has launched its first-ever Lahore to Baku direct flight, opening new travel opportunities for both business and tourism. The historic flight marks a significant milestone in Pakistan’s aviation sector and strengthens ties between Pakistan and Azerbaijan.

A Grand Takeoff Ceremony

PIA’s inaugural Flight PK-159 departed from Lahore’s Allama Iqbal International Airport following a special ceremony. The send-off event took place in the international departure lounge, attended by notable dignitaries including the Federal Defence Minister, Director General of the Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority (PCAA), top PIA officials, and the Ambassador of Azerbaijan.

To commemorate the launch, a ceremonial cake-cutting event was held at the airport, symbolizing the start of a new chapter in Pakistan’s international flight operations. A total of 174 passengers boarded the flight to Baku, the vibrant capital of Azerbaijan.

Strengthening Bilateral Relations

 Officials view the direct flight as a boost for trade, tourism, and cultural exchange between the two countries.

PIA management announced that two weekly flights will operate from Lahore to Baku initially. Depending on passenger demand, the frequency of flights may increase in the near future.

Baku is Azerbaijan’s capital and largest city, known for its unique blend of modern architecture and ancient heritage. From the glittering Flame Towers to the cobbled streets of the UNESCO-listed Old City (Icherisheher), Baku offers an unforgettable experience for tourists.

Visiting Baku has become easier for Pakistani tourists, thanks to Azerbaijan’s streamlined e-visa policy. Citizens of Pakistan can now apply online and receive an e-visit visa with a minimal fee. This digital service significantly reduces processing time and adds convenience for travelers planning short or long stays.

The collaboration between the two nations on visa facilitation and direct air travel reflects a shared interest in expanding people-to-people contact and boosting tourism.

Future Prospects

The successful launch of the Lahore to Baku route is part of PIA’s broader strategy to expand into Central Asia and explore high-potential international markets.
