The controversial canal project in Sindh has been put on hold by the federal government, but protests continue across the province. Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah is now calling on demonstrators to end their agitation, questioning the purpose of further unrest after the government’s latest move.

Canal Project Halted Amid Rising Tensions

On Thursday night, the federal government announced a halt to the disputed canal initiative. Officials stated that the project would remain suspended until a consensus is developed through the Council of Common Interests (CCI), the constitutional forum responsible for resolving inter-provincial disputes.

Despite this decision, legal bodies and opposition parties in Sindh remained unconvinced. They pledged to continue their sit-in at Babarloi bypass in Khairpur, demanding an official notification that fully cancels the project, rather than a temporary suspension.

CM Criticizes Continued Protests

Speaking on Friday, CM Murad Ali Shah expressed concern over the ongoing roadblocks and disruptions caused by protesters. A statement from the Chief Minister’s House stressed that while peaceful demonstrations are a constitutional right, obstructing public movement and affecting daily life is not justifiable.

He appealed to protest leaders to reopen roads and return to dialogue, urging them to recognize the government’s decision as a step toward resolving the issue peacefully.

Call for Unity Over Division

The chief minister also questioned the political motivations driving continued unrest, implying that some groups might be exploiting the situation for political gain. He emphasized that the situation called for unity, especially in light of the current external threats.
