5.3-Magnitude Earthquake Jolts Northern Pakistan

Tremors felt in Islamabad, KP, and tribal regions; no casualties reported

ISLAMABAD: A 5.3-magnitude earthquake shook parts of northern Pakistan on Saturday morning, prompting fear and concern among residents.

According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), the quake struck at 10:08 am PST.

Tremors were felt in Islamabad, Attock, and several areas in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, including Peshawar, Swat, Mardan, Nowshera, and Swabi. People in North Waziristan and surrounding tribal areas also experienced the jolt.

Epicentre in Hindu Kush Region

The PMD confirmed that the earthquake’s epicentre was located in the Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan, a seismically active area known for deep-focus quakes.

  • Depth: 230 kilometres

  • Latitude: 36.63 N

  • Longitude: 71.13 E

The significant depth helped reduce the potential damage, despite the wide area affected.

No Damage or Casualties Reported

Authorities have so far received no immediate reports of damage or casualties.

Emergency services and disaster management authorities remain on alert. They are closely monitoring the situation and maintaining communication with local administration across affected areas.

Public Reaction and Safety Measures

Residents in the impacted cities and towns reported noticeable shaking. Many rushed outdoors in panic.

In Peshawar and Mardan, people vacated buildings, fearing aftershocks. Schools and offices temporarily paused operations until authorities cleared buildings for safety.

In Islamabad and Attock, office workers and shopkeepers were seen gathering in open spaces.

Region Prone to Earthquakes

The Hindu Kush region is known for its frequent seismic activity due to tectonic movements between the Indian and Eurasian plates. Earthquakes originating from this zone often impact both Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Seismologists warn that while deep earthquakes usually cause less surface damage, they can still be felt over large distances.

Authorities Urge Calm

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and PMD urged citizens to remain calm and follow safety protocols.

Authorities advised people to stay away from unstable structures, avoid elevators, and move to open spaces in case of aftershocks.

So far, the situation remains under control, and emergency teams are prepared for a rapid response if needed.

Saturday’s earthquake served as a reminder of the region’s vulnerability to seismic events. While no damage or loss of life occurred, the widespread tremors highlight the importance of preparedness and public awareness.
