PTI Chairman Gohar Ali Khan congratulated Field Marshal Munir on his historic promotion, calling it a moment of greater responsibility. He said General Asim Munir now holds a critical role in easing Pakistan’s political tensions and steering the country toward stability.
Promotion Amid National Turmoil
Earlier this week, the government elevated General Munir to field marshal in recognition of his leadership during the recent conflict with India. The military confrontation ended with a US-brokered ceasefire and was termed a decisive victory for Pakistan. This is only the second time in history a Pakistani officer has received this rank, the first being General Ayub Khan in 1959.
PTI Seeks Dialogue, Not Confrontation
Outside Adiala Jail, Gohar told reporters that PTI holds no enmity toward the military. He emphasized Imran Khan’s willingness to engage in talks with the establishment for national interest. “We’ve never closed the door for dialogue,” he said.
He also stressed that military influence in politics should end but acknowledged the army’s deep-rooted role in national affairs. “Whoever can help improve the situation should act now,” he added.

Victory Against India Raises Stakes
Gohar also commented on India, warning that another provocation could follow. He praised the armed forces for an “unimaginable” victory, calling the recent war more serious than the 1965 or 1971 conflicts due to nuclear stakes. He urged the nation to remain united and vigilant.
Symbolism Over Authority
General Munir’s new rank, granted under Rule 199A of Army Regulations, holds symbolic weight but does not expand his operational powers. Experts say the move signals confidence in his leadership during a period of political instability and civil-military tension.
Senator Mushahid Hussain noted that Field Marshal Munir now occupies a central place in the country’s power structure. Historically, such titles reflect wartime excellence without changing command roles—similar to field marshal titles in India, the UK, and the US.
A New Chapter in Civil-Military Relations
With this rare promotion, the government has sent a message of recognition and unity. PTI’s response suggests a willingness to move past confrontation and seek a way forward.
