Pakistan-Iran relations took center stage as Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif met Iranian President Dr. Masoud Pezeshkian on the sidelines of the 17th Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) Summit in Khankendi, Azerbaijan. The two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to deepening bilateral cooperation and addressing regional issues through diplomacy and mutual understanding.

Focus on Regional Peace

The meeting came amid heightened regional tension following Israel’s military actions against Iran. PM Shehbaz praised Iran’s decision to exercise restraint and pursue a ceasefire, calling it a display of responsible leadership. He reaffirmed Pakistan’s unwavering support for Iran, stressing the need for dialogue and diplomacy to ensure peace and stability in the region.

Strengthening Bilateral Cooperation

Both leaders expressed satisfaction over the implementation of decisions made during previous engagements. They agreed to accelerate efforts in trade, energy, and connectivity, aiming to elevate economic cooperation.

President Pezeshkian appreciated Pakistan’s diplomatic support during the recent crisis and acknowledged Islamabad’s role in promoting de-escalation. PM Shehbaz also conveyed best wishes to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, reaffirming long-standing ties between the two nations.

ECO Summit Highlights

The 17th ECO Summit, themed “New ECO Vision for a Sustainable and Climate Resilient Future,” gathered regional leaders to discuss trade, transport, climate change, and economic integration.

PM Shehbaz arrived in Azerbaijan on Thursday, accompanied by Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar, and Special Assistant Tariq Fatemi. Upon landing at Fuzuli International Airport, he was received by Azerbaijan’s Minister of Culture Adil Karimli and other dignitaries.
