Lee Jung-jae, the star of Squid Game, has revealed that Gi-hun’s sacrifice in the finale of Season 3 wasn’t the only ending considered for his iconic character. The global hit series concluded its third and final season on June 27, 2025, leaving fans with an emotional farewell.

A Shocking Finale

In an interview with Variety, Lee shared his reaction to reading the script for the final season. “I was very shocked too,” he said. “It was not something I had expected to see.” Gi-hun, known as Player 456, had survived the brutal games in Seasons 1 and 2. However, in the final episode, he sacrifices himself to save the infant of Player 222, portrayed by Jo Yu-ri, during the climactic Sky Squid Game.

Alternate Endings Considered

Lee recalled deep conversations with director Hwang Dong-hyuk about the ending. However “I asked him, ‘Did you have different endings in mind?’ And he told me that he did,” Lee revealed. While several versions were considered, the director ultimately believed Gi-hun’s selfless act was the most meaningful conclusion for the series.

Symbolism Behind the Ending

The actor said the director encouraged him to look beyond the death itself. “He told me not to see Gi-hun’s sacrifice as just a sacrifice, but as something that symbolizes hope for humanity,” Lee explained. This perspective gave deeper emotional weight to Gi-hun’s decision and aligned with the show’s broader themes of morality, survival, and human dignity.

A Legacy Beyond the Game

Squid Game became a cultural phenomenon from its debut, with Lee’s portrayal of Gi-hun at its emotional core. The final season’s ending, though tragic, resonated with fans for its moral message and emotional intensity. As the curtain falls on Squid Game, Gi-hun’s final act stands as a powerful symbol of sacrifice and hope in a world built on desperation and fear.
