Ashura Observed Nationwide Under Tight Security Measures

Ashura processions are taking place across Pakistan today (Sunday) under strict security arrangements, as thousands of mourners mark the martyrdom of Imam Husain (RA) and the tragedy of Karbala with deep reverence and solemnity.

Widespread Participation Across Provinces

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi confirmed that 4,836 processions and 5,480 majalis are being held nationwide. In Punjab alone, 2,502 majalis and 3,025 processions are taking place. Sindh has 1,039 processions and 1,040 majalis, while KP reports 735 majalis and 257 processions. Other regions, including Balochistan, Gilgit-Baltistan, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, and Islamabad, are also hosting religious gatherings.

Heavy Security Deployment

Security forces, including the army and police, are on high alert. In Karachi, over 7,000 police personnel, including expert snipers and traffic officers, are managing the main procession, which started from Nishtar Park. Shahenshah Hussain Naqvi is leading the event attended by 3,500–4,000 mourners.

In Lahore and Multan, thousands of police and rescue personnel have been deployed. However In Multan alone, 225 majalis and 283 processions are underway, monitored by 5,000 security staff and 12 special vigilance teams. CCTV cameras have been installed at 180 locations. Punjab Rescue 1122 has mobilized 600 personnel, 30 ambulances, and multiple fire tenders for emergencies.

Support Services and Monitoring

Sindh Governor House distributed niaz (charity food) to mourners in Karachi. In Islamabad, 4,000 officers are securing 12 processions and 48 gatherings. Inspector General of Police Syed Ali Nasir Rizvi is overseeing operations, supported by drone surveillance, body cameras, and Safe City monitoring.

Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has instructed all districts in Punjab to ensure seamless arrangements.

Officials continue to urge the public to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activity immediately.
