GAZA CITY – A supposed place of refuge turned into a scene of horror as an Israeli airstrike struck Remal Clinic in western Gaza City late Sunday night, killing at least six Palestinians and wounding several more. The clinic had been housing dozens of displaced families who believed they were in a safe zone.

Eyewitnesses described the attack as sudden and unprovoked, tearing through rooms filled with civilians — mostly women, children, and the elderly — who had fled fighting in other parts of the city. Blood stained the clinic’s floors, and shattered medical equipment mixed with debris and the cries of survivors.

“It’s a Horrifying Scene”: Survivors Speak Out

Umm Waseem, a displaced woman who witnessed the aftermath, struggled to hold back tears as she recounted the chaos.
“They told me that my brother-in-law was wounded and his son killed,” she said. “His wife and daughter are in the ICU.”

Her voice trembled as she looked at the wreckage. “The strike hit the room next to his where he was with his family. As you can see, it’s a horrifying scene – blood everywhere, bodies torn apart.”

Injured survivors were rushed to al-Ahli Hospital, which is already overwhelmed with casualties from recent bombings. Doctors there confirmed that the wounded included multiple women and children in critical condition.

“We Thought It Was Safe”

Another survivor, Ahmed Qaddoum, described the moment the strike hit:
“We went to western Gaza City as instructed by the Israeli army and took shelter in Remal Clinic. It was filled with displaced people from Shujayea and other areas of Gaza City,” he said.

“While we were asleep, thinking it was safe, missiles suddenly struck. We rushed out and saw bodies, torn limbs, women and children. The place was completely devastated.”

Qaddoum’s account reflects a growing pattern in Gaza where civilians are struck in locations deemed “safe” zones by Israeli military orders — schools, hospitals, clinics, and even UN facilities. Many residents now say no place in Gaza can be trusted for protection.

International Law and the Human Toll

Medical centers are protected under international humanitarian law, and strikes on such facilities — especially those housing civilians — are widely considered violations of the Geneva Conventions. Rights groups and international observers have condemned repeated attacks on Gaza’s health infrastructure, with the Remal Clinic attack being the latest in a long list.

Israeli Air Strike Kills Palestinian Doctor and His Children in Gaza

The World Health Organization (WHO) and Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders) have both raised alarms over the targeting of medical facilities, warning that it not only endangers lives directly but cripples Gaza’s ability to respond to the humanitarian catastrophe.

Since May 2024, more than 750 Palestinians have been killed near aid and medical sites, according to local authorities, as shelters and hospitals increasingly become the targets of military operations.

A City of Ghosts and Grief

What remains of the Remal Clinic is now a collapsed building soaked in grief and fear. For many Gazans, it symbolizes a grim reality — that even places of healing can become sites of destruction.

Israeli Strike Kills Nearly 40 in Gaza’s Deadliest Attack Yet

“We are living through hell,” said a nurse who arrived at the scene minutes after the blast. “I’ve seen many tragedies during this war, but this… this was something else.”

With Israeli strikes intensifying and Gaza’s health system on the verge of collapse, many families are left to mourn loved ones with no end to the violence in sight. And in places like Remal Clinic, the line between sanctuary and death trap has disappeared completely.
