US President Donald Trump has escalated his trade war strategy by threatening a 10% tariff on countries that align with BRICS tariffs and policies that oppose American interests. The warning, posted on social media, makes clear there will be “no exceptions” for nations siding with BRICS, a bloc that includes China, Russia, India, and others.

Tariff Deadline and Letters to Nations

The US had set a July 9 deadline for trade deals. However, tariffs are now expected to take effect from August 1. Trump announced that letters would be sent this week to about 15 countries, informing them of new tariff rates unless they agree to revised trade terms. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick confirmed the enforcement date.

Few Deals Finalized So Far

So far, the US has finalized deals with the UK, Vietnam, and reached a partial agreement with China.

  • The UK deal cuts tariffs on cars and aerospace goods.

  • Vietnam agreed to a 20% tax on its exports to the US, while US exports face no tariffs.

  • The China agreement reduced US tariffs from 145% to 30%, and China cut its own duties while easing export restrictions.

BRICS Reactions and Global Impact

Trump’s move comes after BRICS finance ministers criticized US tariffs, calling them a threat to global trade. The expanded BRICS alliance now includes Egypt, Iran, Indonesia, and Saudi Arabia, representing over half the world’s population. The bloc has pushed for IMF reforms and an alternative currency to challenge the US dollar.

Business Leaders Warn of Supply Chain Risks

Experts warn that moving away from trade with China is unrealistic. Andrew Wilson of the International Chamber of Commerce said global industries depend on China’s dominance in electric vehicles, batteries, and rare earth minerals.

Tensions with the EU and Japan

The EU is negotiating to maintain a 10% tariff on exports to the US while lowering other trade taxes. Trump also warned Japan could face tariffs of up to 35% if a deal isn’t reached by midweek.

The trade battlefield is shifting fast, with high stakes for global economies and strained US alliances.
