Pakistan has expressed deep sorrow and solidarity with Turkiye after a tragic methane gas incident killed 12 Turkish soldiers during a mission in northern Iraq. The operation aimed to recover the remains of a fallen soldier in a region known for intense clashes with the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK).
Mission Turns Fatal
The Turkish defense ministry reported that the soldiers were operating in the Claw-Lock Operation zone when they were exposed to methane gas inside a cave.
Pakistan Expresses Condolences
In a statement, Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs offered heartfelt condolences:
“We are deeply saddened to learn that 12 Turkish soldiers were martyred after being exposed to methane gas. We extend our sympathies to the bereaved families and stand in firm solidarity with brotherly Turkiye in this moment of grief.”

Methane Risks in Military Zones
While rare, fatal gas exposures in combat zones do occur, especially in enclosed spaces like caves. Methane, a colorless and odorless gas, can displace oxygen and lead to suffocation. Turkish forces have often reported discovering complex tunnel networks used by PKK fighters, sometimes laced with explosives or chemicals.
Continuing Challenges in High-Risk Terrain
The recent tragedy highlights the persistent dangers faced by Turkish troops operating in Iraq’s Kurdistan region. Turkiye maintains military bases there despite criticism from Baghdad. Ankara defends these deployments as vital for national security.
Strong Bilateral Support
Pakistan and Turkiye enjoy strong defense and diplomatic ties. Islamabad regularly supports Ankara’s security operations and has consistently backed Turkiye in its fight against the PKK. The latest statement once again reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to standing with Turkiye in times of crisis.
