Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has firmly rejected resignation rumors involving President Asif Ali Zardari, calling them part of a “malicious campaign” targeting top national leaders. He stated that no discussion has taken place regarding the president’s resignation, nor is there any intent to pursue such an idea.
Strong Civil-Military Ties
Naqvi emphasized that President Zardari maintains a “strong and respectful relationship” with the leadership of the armed forces. He also clarified that Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Field Marshal Asim Munir has no ambitions to assume the presidency and remains fully committed to Pakistan’s stability.
He quoted the president as saying, “I know who is spreading these falsehoods, why they are doing so, and who stands to benefit from this propaganda.”
Political Unity and Coalition Strength
Backing the minister’s statement, PML-N Senator Irfan Siddiqui also denied the rumors in a television interview. He dismissed stories about Zardari’s resignation, Nawaz Sharif returning to Adiala Jail, or Imran Khan’s sons entering politics as “bogus and table news.”
Siddiqui highlighted that Zardari has not created any friction within the ruling alliance and respects his constitutional role. He added, “We have a coalition with the PPP. Why would we bring down this system?”

Coordinated Disinformation Campaigns
Officials suggest that the rumors may be part of broader digital misinformation efforts. Naqvi accused certain actors of collaborating with hostile foreign agencies to destabilize Pakistan through fake narratives.
He asserted, “Do whatever you want with foreign help. We’ll do whatever it takes to make Pakistan strong again, InshAllah.”
Over recent years, anti-army campaigns on social media have increased, prompting repeated warnings from both the government and military about the dangers of “digital terrorism.”
Recognition Amid Stability
In May, President Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif promoted Gen Asim Munir to Field Marshal for his leadership during the conflict with India. The gesture symbolized unity between the political and military leadership during times of crisis.
The current government sees the civil-military hybrid governance model as a necessary and functioning system during challenging times.
