Senators Demand Justice After Brutal Honour Killing

Lawmakers in Pakistan’s Senate have forcefully condemned a recent honour killing in Balochistan that claimed the lives of a man and a woman. The tragic shooting has sparked outrage among legislators, who described the act as “barbaric” and urged immediate justice. Senators stressed that no civilized nation should tolerate such brutality.

Senators Speak Out

During the Senate session on Monday, several senators took the floor to denounce the incident in strong terms.
Sherry Rehman, Khalida Ateeb, Aimal Wali Khan, Irfan-ul-Haque Siddiqui, Ali Zafar, and Samina Mumtaz Zehri were among those who voiced deep concern.

They unanimously declared that such violent acts have no place in society and demanded strict punishment for those responsible.

“The state must not stay silent when justice is trampled like this,” one senator emphasized. “This is not about culture or tradition—it is plain murder.”

Calls for Swift Action

Senators urged law enforcement agencies to identify and arrest the perpetrators without delay. They demanded that the government pursue the case with seriousness and transparency.

“This cannot be brushed under the carpet,” said Aimal Wali Khan. “The killers must face the full force of the law.”

Lawmakers also called on the judiciary to ensure the case is not drawn out over years. Speedy trials and severe sentences, they argued, are key to deterring future crimes of this nature.

A Broader Cultural Problem

Several senators noted that the issue of honour killings is not limited to one province. They cited similar incidents in other parts of the country and said that the underlying mindset must be challenged at all levels.

Sherry Rehman pointed out the need for public education campaigns to change harmful beliefs about “honour.” She urged the media, religious leaders, and civil society to speak out more forcefully.

“We cannot claim to be progressing as a society while tolerating the murder of women under the excuse of honour,” she stated.

Resolution on Drug Abuse in Schools

In another key development during the session, the Senate unanimously passed a resolution addressing a different but equally pressing issue—drug abuse in educational institutions.

Moved by Senator Mohsin Aziz and supported by others, the resolution called for urgent steps to stop the spread of drugs among students. Lawmakers highlighted the growing number of cases and expressed alarm at the damage being done to young lives.

National Strategy Urged

The resolution urged the federal government to work closely with provincial governments to form a unified national strategy. This would include stricter enforcement, increased awareness programs, and support for rehabilitation.

“Educational institutions should be safe spaces for learning, not places where our youth fall prey to addiction,” Mohsin Aziz said. “We must act before it’s too late.”

Senators stressed that curbing drug use in schools requires a coordinated effort. They called on parents, teachers, and communities to stay alert and engaged.

They also recommended that the Ministry of Education introduce mandatory drug awareness sessions in schools and colleges.

Next Senate Session

The Senate will reconvene on Thursday at 5:00 p.m. Lawmakers are expected to continue discussions on social issues, legislative reforms, and security concerns across the country.

These back-to-back concerns—honour killings and drug abuse—have brought into focus the urgent need for both cultural and institutional reforms in Pakistan. Lawmakers hope that strong words will soon translate into stronger action.
