Cricket fans are in for a major showdown as Asia Cup 2025 places traditional rivals Pakistan and India in the same group. The Asian Cricket Council (ACC) confirmed that the tournament will be played from September 9 to 28 in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), setting the stage for intense T20 action between eight top Asian teams.
Group Stage Highlights
According to the grouping shared by ACC President Mohsin Naqvi, Group A includes Pakistan, India, UAE, and Oman. Group B features Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, and Hong Kong. With both groups featuring strong competitors, fans can expect high-voltage cricket right from the start.
The placement of Pakistan and India in the same group has instantly raised excitement levels. The two teams have a fierce cricketing rivalry and their matches always draw massive global attention.
Tournament Format and Schedule
Asia Cup 2025 will be played in the T20 format, making it a critical preparation platform ahead of the T20 World Cup 2026, co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka. The ACC confirmed that the detailed match schedule will be released soon. However, with the tournament just weeks away, cricket boards and players have already begun fine-tuning their plans.
Mohsin Naqvi, who is also the Chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), announced the dates in a social media post. He expressed his enthusiasm, saying, “We look forward to a spectacular display of cricket.”
Hosting in UAE
Although India originally held the hosting rights for the 2025 edition, ongoing political tensions with Pakistan forced a shift in venue. The ACC decided to move the tournament to the UAE, a neutral ground known for successfully hosting several high-profile cricket events.
This includes previous Asia Cups, Indian Premier League (IPL) matches, and ICC World Cup qualifiers. The UAE’s top-class stadiums in Dubai and Abu Dhabi are expected to host the majority of the games.
Bilateral Agreement Leads to Venue Shift
Earlier this year, both the PCB and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) mutually agreed not to play matches in each other’s countries. As a result, a neutral venue became necessary to keep the tournament on track.
Naqvi confirmed this decision after chairing the ACC’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Dhaka, which was attended by representatives from all 25 member nations. Although the BCCI had initially planned to boycott the meeting, it later joined virtually through its vice-president Rajeev Shukla.
Naqvi stated, “We have decided to work together for the betterment of cricket,” signaling renewed efforts to maintain cooperation despite political hurdles.

Automatic and Qualified Entries
Five full ACC members — Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan — secured direct qualification for the tournament. They will be joined by Hong Kong, UAE, and Oman, who earned their spots by finishing in the top three of the ACC Men’s Premier Cup.
This blend of experienced teams and emerging contenders promises a competitive and unpredictable tournament.
Political Tensions Influence Choices
While alternative locations were briefly considered, diplomatic and trade tensions made them unfeasible. The strained relations between India and Pakistan, as well as India’s current issues with Bangladesh, left UAE as the most logical and neutral option.
This decision has proven wise in the past, with the UAE successfully hosting pressure-filled matches without controversy or logistical issues.
Anticipation Builds for Blockbuster Matches
With Pakistan and India drawn in the same group, cricket fans worldwide are eagerly awaiting one of the sport’s biggest rivalries. Their match, expected early in the group stage, could set the tone for the tournament and play a vital role in shaping the semi-final lineup.
As teams finalize their squads and training camps, all eyes will remain on the ACC’s upcoming announcement of the match fixtures. The Asia Cup 2025 promises not just thrilling cricket but also a rare chance for Asian nations to showcase their skills in a neutral, high-pressure environment.
With national pride, qualification hopes, and preparation for the T20 World Cup on the line, this edition could become one of the most watched in recent history.
