Despite ongoing international efforts to deliver humanitarian aid, medical experts warn that for many of Gaza’s starving children, the damage may already be irreversible. Chronic hunger has affected thousands of infants and young children across the besieged strip, and even those who survive may suffer long-term developmental and cognitive impairments.
According to pediatric specialists working with international NGOs, prolonged malnutrition during early childhood disrupts brain development, stunts physical growth, and weakens immune systems. “If critical nutrients don’t reach a child during their first 1,000 days of life, recovery becomes nearly impossible,” said one UNICEF health worker stationed near the Rafah crossing.
The situation has become so dire that doctors in Gaza are reporting signs of wasting—an advanced form of malnutrition—among newborns and toddlers. In overcrowded displacement camps and bombed-out hospitals, medical workers are struggling to administer basic nutrition to children showing visible signs of starvation: sunken eyes, thin limbs, and severely weakened muscles.

UN Warns of Worsening Famine Conditions
The United Nations has described the situation as a “catastrophic hunger crisis” and warns that Gaza is now on the brink of full-scale famine. Aid convoys, blocked or delayed for weeks, have only recently gained limited access to parts of northern Gaza, where hunger is most severe. However, the food delivered is not nearly enough.
Martin Griffiths, UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, said, “We are watching famine unfold in real time.” He emphasized that the restrictions imposed on food, water, and fuel entering Gaza must be lifted immediately to prevent further deaths.
The Health Ministry in Gaza has recorded 154 deaths directly linked to starvation and malnutrition, with 89 of the victims being children. These numbers are expected to rise as more hospitals report hunger-related fatalities and as families bury their loved ones without ever reaching medical facilities.
In a statement posted to Telegram, Gaza’s Health Ministry said that most victims die in silence, often without official documentation, particularly in areas where Israeli strikes have destroyed clinics and ambulances.

Arrests and Raids Escalate in the West Bank
While Gaza reels from the humanitarian disaster, Israeli forces continue to escalate raids across the occupied West Bank. On the same day new child famine deaths were reported, 18 Palestinians were arrested during a pre-dawn raid, according to the Palestinian Prisoners’ Media Office (ASRA).
The arrests included former detainees and political activists, mainly from the governorates of Hebron, Nablus, and Salfit. Since the outbreak of Israel’s war on Gaza in October 2023, its forces have intensified operations in the West Bank. The military crackdown has been accompanied by violent settler attacks, leaving over 1,000 Palestinians dead.
Human rights organizations warn that these raids not only violate international law but also distract from the growing emergency in Gaza. “While the world focuses on aid trucks, Israel continues a campaign of repression and displacement in the West Bank,” said a spokesperson from Al-Haq, a Palestinian legal group.
The simultaneous collapse of humanitarian protections in both Gaza and the West Bank reveals a broader pattern of systemic violations against Palestinians, drawing international condemnation.
The Long-Term Impact on a Generation
Medical professionals and humanitarian experts fear the psychological and physical scars of this war will last far beyond the ceasefire. For Gaza’s starving children, hunger is not only a matter of survival—it is shaping their futures in devastating ways.
Doctors Without Borders and the World Health Organization have issued repeated alerts about the lack of nutritional supplements, clean water, and basic health services. Even if aid reaches every household today, children already suffering from severe acute malnutrition face permanent cognitive delays and compromised immune systems for life.
Educational experts also note that hunger impairs concentration, learning, and emotional stability. “We are not just losing lives; we are losing futures,” said a UNICEF official. Schools remain closed, many turned into shelters or destroyed, and trauma continues to mount with every passing day.
The suffering of Gaza’s starving children has become one of the most powerful symbols of this war’s toll. Unless a massive, sustained relief effort begins immediately, an entire generation risks growing up stunted, traumatized, and forgotten by the international community.
