Climate resilience is no longer optional for Pakistan, said Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi, as he urged immediate local action against climate change. Speaking at a high-level climate conference in Peshawar, the Governor stressed that climate change is not just a global challenge—it is a pressing threat to communities across KP and must be addressed at every level of society.

Climate Change Hits Home in KP

Governor Kundi highlighted that Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is already facing severe environmental disruptions. From flash floods to glacial melt and frequent forest fires, the province is on the frontlines of the climate emergency. He pointed out that these issues are no longer distant scientific discussions—they are visible in the changing weather patterns, lost livelihoods, and threatened ecosystems throughout the region.

The Governor was addressing a conference on climate challenges held at the Governor House in Peshawar. The event, hosted by the National Youth Climate Change Council (NYCCC), drew experts, youth activists, and representatives from various development sectors. Key participants included NYCCC CEO Muhammad Umair Mufakkar, National Disaster Risk Management Fund (NDRMF) CEO Bilal Anwar, and UNICEF Pakistan Climate Officer Ms. Javeria.

Call for Coordinated and Inclusive Action

In his address, Governor Kundi called climate change a multi-dimensional crisis—scientific, economic, social, and moral. He emphasized the need for a united front that includes policymakers, civil society, youth leaders, and international partners. “This is not just about carbon emissions or global treaties. It’s about our people, our land, and our survival,” he stated.

He outlined several areas where action must be taken immediately. These include sustainable development, investment in renewable energy, enhancement of early disaster warning systems, and widespread awareness campaigns to educate the public about environmental responsibility.

Youth Involvement Is Key

Governor Kundi stressed that young people must be at the heart of the climate movement. He encouraged youth across KP to lead awareness campaigns, engage in green innovation, and push for policy change through evidence-based advocacy. “This is the defining challenge of our generation. But within it lies the opportunity to build a safer and more sustainable tomorrow,” he said.

He added that platforms like the NYCCC are vital in giving a voice to those most affected by climate change. By involving communities directly in decision-making, the province can create more relevant and long-term solutions.

Recognition of Climate Advocates

The conference concluded with Governor Kundi distributing commemorative shields to participants, acknowledging their efforts in promoting climate action. He praised the collaborative work of government bodies and grassroots organizations in driving awareness and resilience-building projects.

Promoting KP’s Economic Potential

Separately, Governor Kundi also highlighted KP’s potential in agriculture and animal husbandry during a meeting with representatives from the poultry and livestock sectors. He announced his participation in the 3rd International Livestock, Poultry, and Fisheries Expo 2025, scheduled for September 18 at Gul Makai Palace, Northern Bypass, Peshawar.

Led by industry leaders Haji Rajwali Mohmand, Muhammad Asif Awan, and Khalid Waqar Chamkani, the delegation invited the Governor to attend the expo as chief guest. The Governor welcomed the initiative, noting its importance in promoting the province’s economic image and encouraging investment in local industries.

He emphasized that events like these not only contribute to economic development but also support KP’s broader sustainability goals by encouraging best practices in food production and animal welfare.

Path Forward

Governor Kundi concluded his remarks with a strong message: climate change will define Pakistan’s future. Whether the country rises to the challenge or continues to suffer depends on the actions taken today. He urged every stakeholder—government, youth, civil society, and private sector—to step forward with urgency and vision.

This dual-focus on environmental and economic resilience, he said, is essential for securing KP’s future and ensuring a livable planet for generations to come.
