Mob violence erupted in Karachi after a dumper truck crushed two siblings to death in a tragic road accident on Rashid Minhas Road in the early hours of Sunday. The accident occurred in the Federal B Area when the truck ran over a motorcycle carrying a father, his 22-year-old daughter Mahnoor, and 14-year-old son Ahmed Raza. All three were injured, but the siblings succumbed to their injuries while the father was admitted to Jinnah Hospital with severe head trauma.

SP Gulberg Iqbal Shaikh told reporters that the dumper truck driver was beaten by residents before being handed over to police in an injured condition. Seven dumper trucks were set on fire by the angry mob, prompting immediate operations to remove the charred remains from the road.

Police arrest driver and suspects
Police confirmed that the dumper truck driver was arrested on the spot. Ten suspects involved in torching the trucks have also been taken into custody, with more arrests expected after reviewing CCTV footage. Traffic police said the accident caused a major disruption on Rashid Minhas Road, forcing authorities to divert vehicles from Sohrab Goth flyover to Sharea Pakistan Water Pump.

The family was reportedly returning from Malir when the collision took place. Zakir, the brother of the injured father, said that Mahnoor was scheduled to be married next month. He called for justice and urged authorities to take measures to prevent similar accidents.

Dumpers association stages protest
In response to the torching of the trucks, the All Pakistan Dumpers Association staged a sit-in on Superhighway, blocking both lanes of the main route. Traffic was diverted from Punjab Adda to Sohrab Goth police station, and from Adil Shah bus stop to Gulshan-e-Iqbal.

Dumpers Association President Liaquat Mehsud claimed that nine vehicles were damaged in the violence and demanded the arrest of those responsible. “We will not leave until the accused are arrested,” he told the media.

Governor calls for action
Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori expressed deep sorrow over the deaths and prayed for the injured father’s recovery. He urged citizens to avoid taking the law into their own hands and directed the provincial government to take strict action against the driver if found guilty.

Tessori also demanded a crackdown on what he described as the “dumper mafia,” which he said poses a serious threat to public safety. He stressed the need for stronger regulations to prevent such incidents and to hold reckless drivers accountable.

Road safety concerns grow
The incident has reignited debate over heavy vehicle safety in Karachi. Residents complain that large trucks, often operating late at night, speed through residential areas and main roads without regard for traffic laws. Many say that repeated accidents involving dumpers have gone unaddressed by the authorities.

Traffic experts argue that stricter enforcement, better road planning, and designated heavy vehicle routes are essential to reduce fatalities. They also stress the importance of mandatory driver training and vehicle maintenance checks to ensure public safety.

For now, the grief-stricken family mourns the loss of Mahnoor and Ahmed Raza, while the city grapples with the aftermath of another deadly road tragedy. Police have pledged to complete their investigation and present a detailed report, while civic authorities face mounting pressure to take decisive steps to prevent further loss of life
