China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi held a key meeting with Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir in Islamabad on Friday, discussing regional security and counter-terrorism, according to the military’s media wing.

Wang Yi arrived in Pakistan late Wednesday night to attend the sixth round of the Pakistan-China Strategic Dialogue, which began on Thursday morning. During his visit, he also met Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and senior officials, reaffirming Beijing’s commitment to strengthening ties with Islamabad.

At the meeting with PM Shehbaz, the Chinese foreign minister highlighted that Beijing remained dedicated to promoting peace, stability, and development in South Asia. He assured that China would continue to stand by Pakistan in defending its sovereignty and advancing its economic growth.

Focus on Regional Security and Counter-Terrorism

In his discussions with COAS Munir, Wang Yi emphasized the urgent need to enhance security cooperation between the two countries. He called for improving security dialogue mechanisms, expanding law enforcement cooperation, and jointly combating transnational terrorism.

According to a statement from the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), both leaders exchanged views on regional challenges and matters of mutual interest. They reaffirmed their resolve to strengthen the bilateral partnership and enhance coordination at both regional and international forums.

“Both sides reaffirmed their resolve to strengthen the strategic partnership and enhance coordination at regional and international forums,” the ISPR said.

China Reaffirms Support for Pakistan

The Chinese foreign minister also reiterated Beijing’s steadfast support for Pakistan’s sovereignty, security, and development goals. He stressed that China would continue opposing external interference in the region while helping Islamabad in addressing terrorism and extremism.

In response, COAS Munir thanked Beijing for its consistent backing and acknowledged the role of China in supporting Pakistan’s economic and defence sectors. He expressed confidence that the partnership between the two countries would further deepen in the coming years.

The meeting concluded with a mutual commitment to advance peace, stability, and prosperity across the region.

Deepening Strategic Partnership

Pakistan and China share an enduring strategic partnership covering trade, infrastructure, defence, and energy. Over the years, their militaries have fostered trust and operational cooperation through joint training exercises, technology exchanges, and frequent high-level visits.

In their latest meeting, both sides pledged to sustain this momentum by strengthening collaboration on counter-terrorism initiatives and expanding cooperation in military technology.

Analysts note that the partnership is particularly significant given the complex regional environment, including evolving security challenges in Afghanistan and rising external geopolitical pressures.

Continuity of Strong Relations

The latest engagement builds on a series of high-level contacts between the two nations. On August 1, COAS Munir attended an event marking the 98th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Liberation Army of China, where he underscored the “enduring partnership” between Islamabad and Beijing as a central pillar of regional stability.

Similarly, during COAS Munir’s visit to Beijing last month, the Chinese leadership praised the Pakistan Army, describing it as a “cornerstone of resilience and a vital contributor to regional peace.”

Looking Ahead

The renewed focus on regional security and counter-terrorism demonstrates the alignment of both countries in tackling shared challenges. Experts argue that closer military and strategic cooperation between Islamabad and Beijing could play a decisive role in shaping the security architecture of South Asia.

With the sixth round of the Pakistan-China Strategic Dialogue underway, policymakers on both sides are expected to further explore avenues of economic, political, and defence cooperation.

As Pakistan navigates internal and external challenges, Beijing’s support is likely to remain a critical factor in sustaining stability and advancing development goals.
