Federal Minister for Law Azam Nazeer Tarar told the National Assembly on Friday that the devastation caused by the recent floods was deeply unfortunate, stressing that natural disasters are sometimes beyond human control. He assured the House that the government is making every possible effort to ensure rehabilitation of those affected.
Floods Cause Large-Scale Damage
Presenting an update on the floor of the assembly, Tarar said that the recent floods had left 1,180 people injured. He reported that 9,292 houses were damaged while 6,180 livestock were lost in the calamity. The disaster displaced 2.1 million people across the country, forcing many into temporary shelters.
Tarar called the destruction a reminder of the destructive power of nature, adding that such events test both the resilience of the people and the capacity of state institutions.
Government Allocates Relief Funds
The minister detailed the financial response rolled out so far. He said families of those killed in the floods had received compensation of Rs2 million each. In addition, Rs690 million was released for immediate relief efforts, while Rs1.3 billion was allocated to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) for rescue and rehabilitation operations.

Punjab Sets Up District-Wise Marquees
Meanwhile, the Punjab government has decided to set up marquees in every district to provide temporary shelter for displaced families. Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz directed that these facilities must include clean water, food, and other essential services to protect vulnerable communities as winter approaches.
Authorities also announced a crackdown on illegal encroachments and settlements along waterways. The provincial government declared rivers and streams as “red zones” for construction to prevent similar disasters in the future.
Forecasts Warn of More Rains
The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) warned that torrential rains are expected in Sindh from September 7. The Guddu Barrage is forecast to witness the highest water flow on September 8, which could worsen the flood situation in surrounding districts.
Officials said flood forecasts for the next 24 hours remain critical, and residents in low-lying areas have been advised to stay vigilant. Authorities have deployed rescue teams to monitor riverbanks and vulnerable points across multiple provinces.
National Assembly Session Adjourned
The National Assembly session, where Tarar presented the flood situation, was later adjourned indefinitely. Lawmakers expressed concern over the scale of the disaster and stressed the need for both immediate relief and long-term disaster management strategies.
Building Resilience Against Natural Disasters
Tarar emphasized that while natural disasters cannot be prevented, preparedness and resilience can reduce their impact. He urged provinces and local governments to cooperate with the NDMA to ensure a coordinated response.
The minister’s remarks underline the scale of challenges Pakistan faces in adapting to extreme weather events. With millions displaced and losses mounting, the country now looks toward recovery efforts that combine relief with long-term planning to reduce future risks.
