High-profile figures from the fashion world and beyond are mourning the death of Giorgio Armani, the Italian designer whose influence reshaped global fashion. Armani’s death at the age of 91 was confirmed Thursday, sparking an outpouring of tributes from colleagues, celebrities, and political leaders.

Global Icons Remember Armani

Hollywood stars, who often wore Armani’s creations on red carpets, shared emotional memories. Actress Julia Roberts described Armani as a “true friend” and “legend,” recalling his generosity and elegance. Leonardo DiCaprio also paid tribute, acknowledging the designer’s artistry and long-standing impact on the entertainment industry.

The news struck especially hard in Italy, where Armani’s name became synonymous with modern style. Tributes quickly followed from some of the nation’s biggest fashion houses.

Versace, Prada, and Zegna Lead Italian Tributes

Donatella Versace, chief brand ambassador of Versace, honored Armani’s unmatched contributions to the industry. “The world has lost a giant today,” she said in a statement. “Giorgio Armani changed history with fashion. He defined style all over the world for generations and was a true genius and a master of class and elegance.”

Miuccia Prada and Patrizio Bertelli, leaders of Prada, described Armani as a “maestro recognized for his elegance and creativity, and an undisputed protagonist of Italian and international fashion.” Prada’s co-creative director Raf Simons called him a “visionary whose genius defined elegance and sophistication.”

Renzo Rosso, founder of Diesel, shared a personal message, calling Armani a “true icon.” Ermenegildo Zegna, whose menswear label once collaborated with Armani, praised him for “bringing the spirit and culture of Made in Italy to the world.”

Tributes from Italy’s Leaders

Recognition of Armani’s cultural impact came from Italy’s highest offices. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni wrote on social media that Armani’s “elegance, sobriety, and creativity” brought luster to Italian fashion and inspired the world. She called him “an icon, a tireless worker, a symbol of the best of Italy.”

President Sergio Mattarella described Armani as “a symbol of Italian genius throughout the world,” highlighting his “sophisticated simplicity” and “dedication to quality.” Carlo Capasa, Chairman of the National Chamber for Italian Fashion, credited Armani with elevating Milan Fashion Week into a premier global event, contributing to Italy’s reputation as a fashion powerhouse.

A Legacy Beyond Fashion

While Armani’s influence was rooted in design, his reach extended far beyond the runway. From the Oscars to sporting arenas, Armani’s suits and gowns became statements of understated elegance. Athletes, actors, and artists joined the chorus of tributes, underscoring his ability to bridge style with culture.

Armani’s passing marks the end of an era for Italian fashion. Yet his vision of refined simplicity continues to inspire young designers and established houses alike. His timeless creations remain part of fashion’s living memory, ensuring that his legacy endures well beyond his lifetime.
