Trump Claims India and Russia Have Aligned With China

The Trump China remark has stirred global attention after the U.S. president declared that India and Russia appear “lost” to Beijing. His comments followed a high-profile summit where Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin stood alongside Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Trump Expresses Frustration

On Friday, President Donald Trump wrote on social media that the two nations seemed to have chosen a closer path with China. “Looks like we’ve lost India and Russia to deepest, darkest China. May they have a long and prosperous future together!” he said, attaching a photo of the three leaders at the summit.

The blunt tone reflected Trump’s frustration with both New Delhi and Moscow. While he has long sought to strengthen ties with India, recent trade tensions have strained relations. His approach to Russia has also been complicated by the ongoing war in Ukraine and Moscow’s deepening ties with Beijing.

India and Russia Stay Silent

India’s foreign ministry declined to comment on Trump’s remarks when asked in New Delhi. The Kremlin and China’s foreign ministry also offered no immediate response. The lack of reaction suggested that neither Moscow nor New Delhi wanted to escalate Trump’s criticism into a diplomatic exchange.

Still, the optics of Putin and Modi greeting Xi warmly at the summit fueled the perception of shifting alliances. Their gestures of solidarity contrasted with Washington’s increasingly strained interactions with both capitals.

Xi’s SCO Summit

The meeting took place in Tianjin, China, where Xi hosted more than 20 leaders of non-Western countries under the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO). The bloc has grown into a major platform for China and Russia to present alternatives to Western-led institutions.

During the summit, Putin and Modi were seen holding hands as they approached Xi. The three then posed side by side, projecting unity. For Beijing, the moment symbolized its ability to rally major powers outside the U.S. sphere of influence.

For Trump, however, the images were a direct challenge. He has repeatedly framed China as the main competitor to American leadership. The sight of India and Russia standing closer to Xi highlighted the limitations of U.S. influence in the current geopolitical climate.

U.S.-India Tensions

Trump has sought stronger trade ties with India but has also clashed with New Delhi over tariffs, digital taxation, and defense purchases. His government’s decision to limit certain visa programs further strained relations.

Despite Washington’s strategic courtship of India as a counterbalance to China, trust has been shaken. Trump’s recent remarks suggest impatience with Modi’s willingness to engage closely with Xi at a time when U.S.-China rivalry is at its peak.

Russia’s Position

Relations between Trump and Putin remain tense. While Trump has expressed personal disappointment with the Russian leader, he has been unable to shift Moscow’s posture in Ukraine. More than three years after the invasion, Russia continues its military campaign with no end in sight.

Trump told reporters at the White House on Thursday night that he planned to speak with Putin soon. Yet, his comments show mounting frustration that Russia remains aligned with Beijing despite American pressure.

The “Weaponization” of Alliances

Analysts say Trump’s statement reflects growing U.S. concerns that traditional strategies to keep Russia and India closer to Washington may be faltering. Both countries maintain longstanding defense and energy ties with Moscow, and China’s economic pull has expanded its influence over regional trade.

The symbolism of India and Russia leaning toward China, at least in Trump’s view, underscores a shifting global order. Beijing’s ability to host major summits and present itself as a center of gravity for non-Western powers has strengthened Xi’s global image.

Domestic Pressures on Trump

Trump’s remarks also come as he faces pressure at home over foreign policy. His administration has struggled to show progress in ending the war in Ukraine. He has also faced criticism over handling trade disputes with allies, including India.

By pointing to India and Russia’s apparent closeness with China, Trump sought to frame the challenge as one created by their choices rather than U.S. shortcomings. Still, the statement reflects a rare public acknowledgment of American influence slipping in key regions.

Reactions from Experts

Foreign policy experts caution against reading Trump’s words as proof of a permanent shift. They argue that India remains deeply invested in balancing ties with the U.S., especially on defense cooperation. Russia, meanwhile, continues to rely heavily on China due to Western sanctions but may seek to avoid total dependence.

Analysts also note that Trump often uses sharp language on social media that may not always align with policy outcomes. Still, the remark highlights real anxieties in Washington about a world where China expands its partnerships at America’s expense.
