Punjab faces a worsening flood crisis as water levels in the Sutlej River continue to rise, prompting authorities to issue a high flood alert and summon the Pakistan Army in Jalalpur Pirwala. The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) confirmed that the situation has deteriorated after India shared fresh data on the flood inflows.

The PDMA Punjab reported that the Indian High Commission formally informed Pakistan about the increasing water discharge from Harike and Ferozepur downstream. The warning has intensified concerns across southern Punjab, where multiple districts remain on edge.

Authorities confirmed that high-level flooding is being monitored closely, while rescue teams and military personnel have been deployed in Jalalpur Pirwala to prevent loss of life and property.

Army Joins Relief Operations

Officials said the army’s deployment marks an urgent step to manage the worsening crisis. Teams have been assigned to strengthen embankments, ensure timely evacuations, and provide assistance to displaced families.

According to PDMA Punjab, rescue boats, food supplies, and medical teams have been moved to vulnerable areas. The authority urged residents in low-lying settlements to cooperate with local administration and evacuate immediately.

Sindh Bracing for Massive Flood Surge

Meanwhile, Sindh is preparing for its own flood emergency. Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah announced that nearly 600,000 cusecs are currently passing through Panjnad, with the flow expected to increase to 700,000 cusecs within the next 24 hours.

Speaking to reporters, the chief minister said the province is preparing for a possible surge of 800,000 cusecs at Guddu Barrage by September 9. Relief camps have been geo-tagged, warehouses stocked with aid, and livestock vaccination services launched to prevent disease outbreaks.

He confirmed that thousands of families had already relocated voluntarily, but acknowledged that displacement remained a challenge.

Karachi and Sindh Brace for Heavy Rains

In addition to floodwaters, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall in Sindh over the next two days. The Met Office reported that a deep depression over Rajasthan and Gujarat is moving into southeastern Sindh, likely affecting Karachi, Tharparkar, Umerkot, Mirpurkhas, Sanghar, and Khairpur.

Karachi is expected to see intermittent heavy showers accompanied by gusty winds and thunderstorms. Authorities have warned residents to take precautions as the weather system could persist until September 10.

Emergency Response in Full Swing

Authorities in Punjab and Sindh have declared full-scale emergency measures to safeguard lives and infrastructure. Rescue officials are monitoring embankments along Sutlej and Indus rivers, while health teams have been placed on high alert to respond to potential outbreaks.

The PDMA stressed that coordination between provinces is crucial, as the combined impact of floodwaters and torrential rains may worsen the humanitarian crisis.
