Intensive Operation Unfolds: Israel Orders Gaza City Evacuation Amid Expanded Military Action
Israel Launches Intensive Operation in Gaza City

Israel’s military has announced that its intensive operation in Gaza City has officially begun. The objective, as stated by Israeli officials, is to destroy Hamas’ military infrastructure in northern Gaza. Heavy airstrikes overnight reportedly killed at least 20 Palestinians, including civilians, and left dozens more injured, as the bombardment targeted residential neighborhoods.
Israel’s Arabic-language spokesperson, Avichay Adree, communicated the start of the operation via social media, urging residents of Gaza City to move southward for safety. Defense Minister Israel Katz reinforced the message with striking language: “Gaza is burning,” he said, emphasizing that Israel will not halt until Hamas is defeated and hostages are released.
Evacuation Warnings, Limited Escape
For weeks, Israeli authorities had been warning Gaza City residents about an impending expansion of operations. Evacuation orders specifically directed people to head south toward areas designated as “safe zones” — such as the coastal region of Al-Mawasi.
However, the orders have faced resistance and practical limitations. Many residents say they cannot comply: the south is already heavily overcrowded, transportation is scarce and expensive, and many have nowhere to go. Some believe there is no truly “safe” place left in Gaza Strip.
According to the United Nations, over 220,000 people have already fled northern Gaza in the past month amid these evacuation warnings. Before that, nearly one million people were living around Gaza City.
Civilian Toll and Humanitarian Crisis
Hospitals in Gaza City have reported heavy civilian casualties. Shifa Hospital said it received 20 bodies after a strike that flattened multiple houses in a western neighborhood, and another 90 wounded in recent hours. Many remain trapped under rubble. “A very tough night in Gaza,” said Dr. Mohamed Abu Selmiyah, hospital director, describing continuous bombing through the night.
The broader humanitarian situation is dire. Famine has been confirmed in Gaza, and humanitarian agencies report that nearly every resident in Gaza City depends on external aid. Many facilities — medical, educational, shelters — are overwhelmed or closing. Health authorities estimate over 64,000 Palestinians have died since the war began in October 2023.

Diplomatic Pressure & Hostage Concerns
International diplomacy is under strain as the military escalation unfolds. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, departing for Qatar, called the situation urgent, signaling that there is a “short window of time” for a negotiated settlement. He emphasized that while a diplomatic solution is preferred, continued escalation may force harsher outcomes.
Meanwhile, families of hostages held in Gaza gathered outside Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu’s residence, pleading for the operation to be paused to ensure their loved ones’ safety. Israel estimates that of the 48 hostages still held, about 20 are alive.
Hamas, on its part, insists it will release remaining hostages only in return for Palestinian prisoners, a lasting ceasefire, and Israeli withdrawal from Gaza.
International Response & Legal Scrutiny
The expanded operation has drawn condemnation from multiple humanitarian and international bodies. A United Nations body has publicly called out Israel’s actions, raising concerns about international law violations — particularly regarding protection of civilians and displacement orders without safe alternative zones.
Doctors Without Borders described the Gaza City offensive as a “death sentence” for nearly one million people trapped in the city, saying the health system faces collapse as famine spreads.
Aid agencies are calling for an immediate ceasefire, expanded humanitarian access, and protection for civilians and civilian infrastructure. They warn that without major changes, the humanitarian toll will worsen dramatically.
Urgency Underlines Choice: Negotiation vs Conflict
As Israel intensifies this intensive operation targeting Gaza City, time has emerged as a key factor in both diplomatic and humanitarian arenas. U.S. officials have expressed that days or a few weeks remain to strike any deal involving hostages and political concessions.
Yet, with evacuation deemed impractical or impossible by many residents, civilians remain caught in the crossfire. The destruction of residential areas and the ongoing displacement risk deepening the humanitarian crisis beyond repair.
