The Dolphins entered Highmark Stadium on Thursday night with most analysts predicting a Buffalo blowout. Instead, Miami gave the Bills a tense, back-and-forth contest before falling 31-21. It was a defeat that left the Dolphins still winless, but also underscored that this roster is not quitting on head coach Mike McDaniel. With a Monday night game against the New York Jets looming in Week 4, Miami now looks for its first victory before September closes.

Dolphins Show Energy and Commitment
Miami started with noticeable energy. Players swarmed the field on defense, and the offense sustained early drives with a mix of runs and short passes. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported before kickoff that owner Stephen Ross is not inclined to fire McDaniel unless fans abandon Hard Rock Stadium or the players stop playing hard. Thursday’s performance suggested neither is happening. The Dolphins were competitive throughout and forced the Bills to dig deep for their win.
Costly Mistakes Undermine Dolphins’ Effort
While Buffalo had its own miscues — a near-fumble on a punt return by Brandon Codrington — the game turned on Miami’s errors. With the score tied 21-21 in the fourth quarter, the defense forced a punt, only to have veteran lineman Zach Sieler flagged for roughing the punter. The penalty gave Josh Allen a new set of downs and led to a 15-yard touchdown strike to Khalil Shakir. Later, quarterback Tua Tagovailoa threw the night’s only interception when he fired directly to linebacker Terrel Bernard. Against a top AFC contender, those mistakes were too costly for the Dolphins to overcome.
Defensive Front Must Improve
The Dolphins’ defensive front, billed as one of the team’s strengths, again struggled. Big names such as Sieler, Bradley Chubb, Jaelan Phillips, and Jordyn Brooks could not control the line of scrimmage. Buffalo ran the ball with ease, while Allen enjoyed long pockets to throw. Even Miami’s third-quarter stops came mostly from solid coverage rather than pressure. The roughing-the-punter penalty on Sieler symbolized a night where the usually reliable defensive stalwart hurt his own team.
Ollie Gordon II Boosts Short-Yardage Game
One bright spot for Miami came from rookie running back Ollie Gordon II. Short-yardage failures plagued the Dolphins last season, but Gordon’s powerful runs offered hope. On the opening drive he converted a third-and-1 before scoring his first career touchdown on a two-yard plunge. He later converted another third-and-1 and ripped off a 16-yard gain on second-and-1. Gordon’s 38 rushing yards might seem modest, but his efficiency in crucial downs gave Miami an element it lacked in 2023.

Passing Attack Lacks a Vertical Threat
Tua Tagovailoa’s stat line looked clean — 22 completions on 34 attempts, two touchdowns — but yielded just 146 passing yards. Most of Miami’s gains came on short throws and yards after the catch by Tyreek Hill or Jaylen Waddle. The Bills adjusted in the second half, swarming swing passes and quick outs. Without a deep threat stretching the field, Buffalo’s safeties and linebackers crept forward, setting up Bernard’s interception. The Dolphins recorded no plays over 20 yards all night, leaving them with a razor-thin margin for error.
Looking Ahead to the Jets
Despite the defeat, the Dolphins left Orchard Park with reasons for optimism. They matched Buffalo’s intensity, showed improvement in the running game, and competed hard for four quarters. Yet the same problems — defensive inconsistency, costly penalties, and lack of explosive passing plays — must be corrected quickly. Miami faces the New York Jets on Monday night in a crucial early-season matchup. A win would reset the team’s trajectory and reward fans for their continued support.
