Portugal Recognises Palestinian State as Wave of Western Support Grows
Gaza’s Humanitarian Toll Adds Pressure

Portugal will officially recognise a Palestinian state on Sunday, September 21, its foreign ministry confirmed on Friday. The declaration coincides with the opening of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, where more than ten other countries are expected to follow suit.
The ministry said it was acting after “the extremely worrying evolution of the conflict” in Gaza and Israel’s “repeated threats to annex Palestinian land.” Portugal had signalled its intention in July but held off until it could coordinate with other Western partners.
“This recognition reflects Portugal’s longstanding commitment to a two-state solution and our concern for the humanitarian crisis unfolding in Gaza,” a ministry statement posted online read.
Britain, Canada and France Prepare Similar Moves
Portugal’s announcement places it alongside a growing bloc of Western nations ready to extend formal recognition. Britain, Canada and France have each indicated that they will declare their support for Palestinian statehood at or around the UN meeting.
Diplomats said these recognitions aim to lend new momentum to a two-state solution as Israel’s campaign in Gaza grinds on. Several leaders plan to use their speeches at the General Assembly to urge a ceasefire and renewed negotiations.
European officials view Portugal’s timing as significant. By announcing before the Assembly convenes, Lisbon can influence the tone of the debate and encourage hesitant states to join.
Gaza’s Humanitarian Toll Adds Pressure
The diplomatic shift comes amid staggering displacement in Gaza. Gaza’s civil defence agency said Friday that 450,000 Palestinians have fled Gaza City since Israel began its ground offensive in August. The Israeli military estimated an even higher figure of about 480,000.
Humanitarian groups argue that this crisis underscores the urgency of a political solution. Portugal’s government cited the exodus as part of its reasoning for recognition, stressing that “no durable peace can be achieved without acknowledging Palestinian self-determination.”

UN Opens Door for Abbas After Visa Denial
The United Nations General Assembly also voted Friday to allow Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to address the annual gathering via video after the United States denied him a visa to travel to New York. The resolution passed with 145 votes in favour and only five against.
Under the measure, Abbas and other senior Palestinian officials may participate in UN meetings virtually over the next year if they face travel restrictions. He is expected to appear at a summit convened by France and Saudi Arabia on Monday to rally support for the two-state solution. Several countries are expected to formally recognise Palestine at that meeting.
Cultural Boycott Highlights Growing Solidarity
Portugal’s decision also coincides with an intensifying cultural boycott of Israel. On Friday, British trip-hop group Massive Attack announced they had joined a new initiative, “No Music for Genocide,” to block their music in Israel. The collective says more than 400 artists and labels have geo-blocked or removed their work from Israeli streaming services in protest at the Gaza war.
The band urged other musicians to “transfer their sadness, anger and artistic contributions into a coherent, reasonable and vital action to end the unspeakable hell being visited upon the Palestinians hour after hour.”
Erdogan Refuses to Return Ancient Stone to Israel
Meanwhile, tensions between Turkey and Israel flared again. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan declared on Friday that Turkey would never return the Siloam or Silwan inscription, a 2,700-year-old Hebrew tablet currently held in Istanbul’s archaeology museum. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had long sought to retrieve the artefact, which was discovered under Ottoman rule.
“Jerusalem is the honour, dignity and glory of all humanity and all Muslims … yet he shamelessly continues to pursue the inscription: we won’t give you that inscription, let alone a single pebble from Jerusalem,” Erdogan said, accusing Netanyahu of “spewing hatred” at Turkey.
U.S. Weapons Sale Highlights Divisions
Adding to the diplomatic backdrop, reports emerged Friday that the Trump administration plans a $6.4 billion weapons sale to Israel, including 30 Apache attack helicopters and 3,250 infantry assault vehicles. The package comes just days before world leaders gather in New York for the Assembly and a high-level Security Council meeting on Gaza.
Critics said the arms deal undercuts efforts by Portugal and other countries to pressure Israel into a ceasefire and negotiations.
What Portugal’s Recognition Means
Analysts say Portugal’s move is largely symbolic but carries political weight. Recognition gives Palestine a stronger footing at international forums and may create momentum for renewed talks. It also signals a shift in Western attitudes after decades of caution.
For Lisbon, the decision reflects both moral and strategic calculations. Portugal maintains cordial relations with Israel but has also built ties with Arab nations and sees itself as a bridge between Europe and the Global South. By acting now, it aligns with a rising global consensus that continued occupation and settlement expansion threaten any prospect of peace.
Toward a Broader Diplomatic Shift
Whether Portugal’s step leads to a cascade of recognitions remains to be seen. Within the European Union, countries remain divided; some still insist on conditioning recognition on negotiations. But momentum is clearly building. With Britain, Canada, and France poised to act, the “Portugal recognises Palestinian state” moment may become a turning point in Western policy.
As the UN General Assembly convenes, Lisbon’s declaration sets the stage for an intense week of diplomacy in New York — one in which the question of Palestinian statehood will take centre stage alongside the urgent humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
