Russia Signals Stronger Ties with Pakistan Through SCO Platform

Russia has expressed strong interest in expanding SCO cooperation with Pakistan, particularly in counter-terrorism and regional stability, according to Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. He shared these views during a meeting with Pakistan’s Special Assistant to the Prime Minister (SAPM) on Foreign Affairs, Tariq Fatemi, in Moscow on June 3.

Pakistan Reaffirms Strategic Partnership

Fatemi conveyed Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s greetings and emphasized Pakistan’s intent to deepen cooperation in energy, trade, and connectivity. He handed over a letter from the Prime Minister to President Vladimir Putin, reinforcing the significance of bilateral ties.

India’s IWT Suspension Raises Alarms

Fatemi also briefed Lavrov on regional developments, expressing concern over India’s threat to suspend the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT). He warned of its serious consequences, especially in light of heightened tensions following the April 22 Pahalgam attack, which left 26 dead. India blamed Pakistan without evidence and launched air and missile strikes, igniting the most intense conflict between the two nations in nearly three decades.

Recent Military Escalation and Ceasefire

Pakistan responded with Operation Bunyan-um-Marsoos, downing six Indian jets and numerous drones. The conflict lasted over 87 hours, resulting in the deaths of 53 Pakistanis, including 13 military personnel and 40 civilians. A US-brokered ceasefire was reached on May 10, halting further escalation.

Russia Supports De-escalation and Development

Lavrov welcomed the improvement in Pakistan-Russia ties and expressed satisfaction over joint ventures like new steel mill projects and critical infrastructure development. He also reiterated Russia’s support for peace efforts between India and Pakistan, stressing the importance of dialogue for broader regional stability.

Mutual Focus on Regional Peace

The meeting reflected both countries’ shared interest in strategic stability and cooperation under the SCO framework. Russia’s commitment to expanded ties comes at a time when South Asia remains fragile and under close global scrutiny.

Construction Timeline and Current Venue

Pending city approval, construction could begin as early as fall 2025. The club currently plays at Soldier Field under a three-year lease. While the iconic venue seats over 60,000, the Fire seeks a right-sized stadium better suited to its growing fanbase and long-term ambitions.

Israeli Fire at Gaza Food Site Kills 27 Palestinians, Sparks Outcry

At least 27 Palestinians were killed and dozens injured when Israeli troops opened fire near a food distribution point in southern Gaza, worsening the ongoing Gaza food crisis. The incident, confirmed by Gaza’s health ministry, marks the third deadly episode in as many days at aid sites.

Fatal Incident at Rafah Distribution Center

The shooting occurred in Rafah, where civilians had gathered to collect food from a site backed by Israeli authorities. According to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), troops fired at “individual suspects” who moved off designated paths. However, eyewitness accounts and local officials report that the victims were unarmed civilians, including children and women.

High Casualties, Rising Anger

Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis received 27 bodies, including three children and two women. Medical staff noted that many suffered from gunshot wounds and shrapnel injuries, suggesting the use of both firearms and heavy munitions. A spokesperson for the International Committee of the Red Cross said their field hospital in Rafah treated 184 casualties, with 27 declared dead.

Third Incident in Three Days

This marks the third straight day of violence at food distribution centers in Gaza, where Israel is trying to impose a new aid control system. Critics, including human rights groups, warn that the shift has dangerously restricted access to essential supplies in a territory already under heavy blockade.

UN Warns of War Crimes

The UN Human Rights Office condemned the attacks, stating that willfully blocking food access may constitute a war crime. “Targeting civilians seeking food is unconscionable,” a spokesperson said.

International Fallout and Spanish Arms Deal Suspension

As outrage grows, Spain’s defense ministry suspended a €285 million missile manufacturing license for an Israeli firm. The move follows Spain’s broader effort to disengage militarily from Israel.

Mounting Toll

Gaza’s health ministry reported 40 deaths and 208 injuries in the past 24 hours alone. With aid routes under fire and infrastructure collapsing, the humanitarian crisis in Gaza continues to deepen.

Security Forces Eliminate Seven Fitna al Hindustan Terrorists in Balochistan

Pakistan’s security forces killed seven terrorists linked to the Indian-backed group Fitna al Hindustan in two separate intelligence-based operations in Balochistan. The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) confirmed that both operations targeted active militant hideouts.

Five Terrorists Killed in Kachhi District

The first operation took place in the Machh area of Kachhi District. Acting on precise intelligence, troops launched a raid on a suspected Fitna al Hindustan stronghold.

Two More Neutralized in Kalat District

In a second operation, security forces targeted another Fitna al Hindustan hideout in the Margand area of Kalat District. The operation led to the neutralization of two additional terrorists. Both individuals were believed to be part of a larger cell planning further attacks.

Weapons and Explosives Seized

Troops recovered a significant cache of weapons, ammunition, and explosives from both sites. These materials were intended for future attacks aimed at destabilizing Balochistan and targeting state institutions. Their seizure has dealt a serious blow to the operational capacity of the group.

Group Linked to Indian Sponsorship

ISPR identified the group as an Indian proxy operating under the banner of Fitna al Hindustan. However The group has been actively engaged in spreading violence and disrupting peace in Balochistan through foreign support and coordinated acts of terrorism.

Ongoing Counterterrorism Efforts

Security forces remain vigilant across the province, intensifying operations against foreign-backed threats. However The successful elimination of these terrorists reflects the growing effectiveness of intelligence-led missions and the state’s commitment to protecting national sovereignty.

The operations in Kachhi and Kalat send a clear message: Pakistan will continue to dismantle hostile networks, especially those fueled by external support, wherever they exist.

Pakistan Fought India Alone During 96-Hour Conflict

General Sahir Shamshad Mirza, Chairman of Pakistan’s Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee, clarified that Pakistan used only its own military resources during the recent 96-hour Pakistan-India conflict. His statement directly rejected Indian media claims alleging Chinese assistance.

No Foreign Help, Equal Equipment

In an interview with the BBC, Gen Mirza explained that Pakistan’s military operated independently, relying on equipment comparable to India’s and on hardware sourced from friendly nations. He emphasized the self-reliant nature of the country’s defense.

Shift in Battle Zones: Cities at Risk

Unlike earlier skirmishes confined to disputed borders, the recent confrontation saw direct targeting of cities. “This time the borders were calm, but the cities were under fire,” he said. Gen Mirza warned that lowering the threshold to urban warfare poses grave risks to both countries.

Clash Sparked by IIOJK Attack

Tensions soared after the April 22 attack in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), which left 26 dead. India blamed Pakistan-based actors without offering evidence. In response, India suspended diplomatic ties, revoked visas, and halted the Indus Waters Treaty. Pakistan called these actions a provocation.

Operation Bunyan-un-Marsoos and Ceasefire

India launched airstrikes on Pakistani cities on May 6 and 7. Pakistan responded with Operation Bunyan-un-Marsoos, targeting Indian military assets. The conflict ended after a U.S.-brokered ceasefire.

Lack of Conflict Management System

Gen Mirza voiced concerns over the lack of structured conflict-resolution tools. He highlighted that only one emergency line—the Director-General Military Operations (DGMO) hotline—is in use. This limitation becomes critical when dealing with a “reckless and extremist mindset,” he warned.

Risks of Future Escalation

Without a proper conflict management system, any future clash could spiral quickly. Gen Mirza cautioned that the current setup leaves global powers little time to mediate, raising the stakes in any future encounter between the nuclear-armed rivals.

Rising Diplomatic Tensions

Separately, Pakistan condemned recent statements by Indian officials demanding the surrender of Azad Jammu and Kashmir. The Foreign Office dismissed these as hostile and disconnected from reality, stressing India’s record of regional destabilization.

ADB Approves $800 Million to Support Pakistan’s Fiscal Reforms

In a major boost to Pakistan’s public finance, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved an $800 million package to support fiscal reforms and strengthen financial sustainability. The aid includes a $300 million policy-based loan and a landmark $500 million guarantee to attract up to $1 billion from commercial banks.

Focus on Fiscal Sustainability

The funding comes under Subprogramme 2 of the ADB’s “Improved Resource Mobilisation and Utilisation Reform Programme.” It aims to help Pakistan stabilize its economy by reducing its fiscal deficit and public debt while expanding fiscal space for development and social spending.

ADB Country Director for Pakistan, Emma Fan, noted, “Pakistan has made significant progress in improving macroeconomic conditions. This programme supports the government’s reform agenda to enhance public finance and encourage sustainable growth.”

Tax and Spending Reforms at the Core

The reform programme targets several key areas. It focuses on overhauling tax policies and improving tax compliance and administration. In addition, the plan emphasizes better public expenditure management and efficient cash handling to ensure transparency and accountability.

The ADB stressed that improving revenue generation and controlling spending are vital steps to reduce reliance on debt and create room for critical investments.

Digital Tools and Private Sector Role

Another major goal of the programme is the digitalisation of financial systems. It promotes online platforms to enhance transparency in public transactions and aims to support investment facilitation. Private sector development is also a core pillar, with policies geared toward a more business-friendly environment.

Long-Term Vision Backed by Global Support

This funding is part of a wider assistance strategy that includes technical guidance and coordination with other international development partners. The goal is to help Pakistan build long-term fiscal resilience through institutional reforms and policy consistency.

The ADB’s move signals strong international backing for Pakistan’s reform efforts and a renewed push toward financial stability and economic recovery.

Jailbreak After Earthquake Shakes Karachi: 213 Inmates Escape Malir Jail

A massive manhunt is underway in Karachi after 213 prisoners escaped from Malir Jail during an earthquake evacuation. The incident happened early Tuesday as tremors forced jail authorities to move inmates out of their barracks for safety. Amid the chaos, hundreds gathered near the main gate and over 200 managed to flee.

Superintendent Arshad Shah confirmed that inmates from Circles No. 4 and 5 were outside their cells when panic set in. “More than 600 inmates were out, and 213 fled in the confusion,” he said. During the escape, one prisoner died and several security personnel were injured.

Sindh Home Minister Zia-ul-Hasan Lanjar called it one of the most serious jailbreaks in recent years. He said nearly 100 inmates forced open the main gate. Raids are ongoing, and 80 prisoners have been recaptured. Over 130 remain at large.

Government Responds, Blames Lax Security

Inspector General of Police Ghulam Nabi Memon visited the jail and said most escapees were minor offenders or had drug-related cases. “There is no sign of pre-planned escape,” he noted. He praised police and Rangers for swiftly securing the facility again.

Lanjar dismissed rumors of wall collapse and blamed staff negligence instead. “The gate was forced open, not the walls,” he said. A formal inquiry committee is being formed, and action will be taken against negligent staff.

Sindh Prisons IG Qazi Nazir said that repeated tremors caused structural cracks, leading to panic. “Prisoners broke the latch of the main gate and damaged several areas, including the IT room,” he added. Bullet shells, shattered glass, and vandalized rooms show the scale of chaos.

Interestingly, in a rare move, the mother of an escaped inmate returned her son voluntarily. “He told me he fled in fear, so I walked him back to jail,” she told reporters.

Security Tightened, Families Await Updates

Police, Rangers, Frontier Corps, SSU, and RRF launched a joint operation to recapture fugitives. Over 79 have been arrested so far, including one from New Karachi facing drug and weapons charges.

Security has been tightened around Shah Latif Town, Quaidabad, and nearby slums. Families of prisoners gathered outside Malir Jail seeking information. A list of escapees has been released to the public.

Sindh CM Murad Ali Shah expressed displeasure over the decision to bring prisoners out during tremors. “This wasn’t the right move,” he said. He warned escaped inmates to return or face severe charges, including terrorism.

The CM has called an emergency meeting with top security officials. Authorities are now considering building a new jail on 850 acres of land in Bin Qasim.

As the city recovers from the tremors, Karachi now faces a new crisis — keeping its prisoners behind bars.

Karachi Rocked by 19 Mild Earthquakes Since Sunday

Karachi has experienced 19 mild earthquakes since Sunday evening, confirmed the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) on Tuesday. The latest tremor hit at 9:57am on June 3, registering a magnitude of 2.8. Its epicentre was 15km northeast of Malir at a depth of 40km.

Earlier, two tremors were recorded late Monday night. The first struck at midnight with a magnitude of 2.6, followed by another at 12:23am measuring 2.8. Both originated northeast of Malir at a depth of 40km.

Another noticeable jolt was felt Tuesday morning at 6:42am. It measured 3.2 in magnitude and was located near Korangi with a shallower depth of 11km. Tremors were widely felt in Landhi, Malir, Quaidabad, and surrounding areas. So far, no injuries or structural damages have been reported.

Landhi Fault Line Reactivated, Says PMD

Chief Meteorologist Aamir Haider explained the repeated quakes are due to the reactivation of the Landhi Fault Line. He described the phenomenon as a “normalisation phase,” during which seismic energy is being slowly released.

“These small tremors are actually helpful,” Haider noted. “They reduce the risk of a large, destructive quake by gradually releasing pressure.”

He added that such mild seismic activity could continue for several more days. The shallow depth of the recent tremors has made them more noticeable across the city. He also reassured the public that buildings situated above the fault line should be able to withstand quakes up to magnitude 6.

Haider further mentioned another fault line near Thana Bula Khan is also contributing to the ongoing tremors. Addressing public concern over cracks in homes, he clarified that these are more likely due to construction flaws than seismic damage.

Timeline of Earthquake Activity in Karachi

The first quake hit on Sunday, June 1, at 5:33pm near Quaidabad. It had a magnitude of 3.6 and occurred at a depth of 10km. Karachi witnessed heightened activity on Monday, with several back-to-back tremors.

On June 2, a 3.2 magnitude quake occurred near Gadap Town at 1:06am. Two more 3.2 magnitude tremors followed later in the morning near Quaidabad. By 11:45am, another tremor hit 40km southeast of Malir, measuring 3.1.

Tremors continued into the afternoon and night with magnitudes ranging from 2.2 to 3.1. The deepest event occurred at 1:11pm on Monday, with a 2.4 magnitude quake 11km east of Malir at a depth of 188km.

By Tuesday, more tremors were recorded — including a significant one at 6:41am near Korangi (3.2 magnitude) and the latest at 9:57am northeast of Malir. Karachiites remain alert as authorities continue to monitor the seismic activity.

UN Demands Probe as Israeli Forces Kill More at Gaza Aid Site

GAZA – Israeli forces opened fire again on Palestinian civilians at a food distribution site in southern Gaza early Monday, killing at least three people and wounding more than 30.

The attack happened just after sunrise near the same Israeli-backed aid site where soldiers had fired on aid seekers the day before. Witnesses and health officials confirmed the shooting started without warning.

Al Jazeera’s Tareq Abu Azzoum, reporting from Deir el-Balah, said, “The Israeli military opened fire on civilians trying to get their hands on food without any kind of warning.”

He added that such incidents are disrupting Gaza’s already fragile civil order. Aid organisations have condemned the growing violence, calling it a direct threat to humanitarian operations.

Survivors Share Horror as Drones Hover Overhead

Witnesses say Israeli snipers and quadcopter drones watched over the crowd near the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) site. The GHF is supported by both Israel and the United States.

Moataz al-Feirani, 21, was among those shot. “I was just walking toward food,” he said. “We had nothing, and they were watching us. Then the shooting started.” He was hit in the leg.

The incident occurred around 5:30am near the Flag Roundabout. Drones hovered overhead, and chaos erupted as bullets hit people from different directions.

A Red Cross field hospital received nearly 50 wounded victims. Two were dead on arrival, according to Hisham Mhanna, spokesperson for the International Committee of the Red Cross. A third victim died later at Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis.

Most injuries were caused by gunshots or shrapnel. International aid groups are growing increasingly alarmed by the repeated targeting of civilians trying to access food.

UN Demands Independent Investigation

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres strongly condemned the violence. On Monday, he called for an “immediate and independent investigation” into what he described as mass shootings of Palestinians.

“It is unacceptable that Palestinians are risking their lives for food,” Guterres said. “The perpetrators must be held accountable.”

The United Nations and aid agencies have reported a rise in hunger-related deaths in Gaza. They blame Israel’s tight control on aid flows and repeated attacks on distribution zones.

The Israeli military has not commented on the latest shooting. However, international pressure is building for transparency and accountability.

Human rights observers warn that these attacks may constitute war crimes. They say civilians gathering at food sites cannot legally be considered combatants.

As the humanitarian crisis deepens, Gazans continue to risk their lives daily for basic survival. Monday’s shooting has added to global outrage and renewed calls for action to protect aid seekers.

The UN has urged all sides to ensure immediate access to food and medical relief, especially in southern Gaza, where famine looms.

Ukraine Launches Massive Drone Strikes on Russian Airbases Before Peace Talks

KYIV – Ukrainian drones struck multiple Russian military airbases on Sunday in a bold operation, just a day before peace talks opened in Istanbul.

According to the Russian Defence Ministry, Ukraine launched drone strikes across five regions: Murmansk, Irkutsk, Ivanovo, Ryazan, and Amur. In Murmansk and Irkutsk, drones managed to ignite several military aircraft.

“These were FPV drones launched near airfields. Some aircraft caught fire,” the ministry confirmed. It added that the fires were controlled, and no casualties occurred. Some individuals involved in the operation were reportedly detained.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy praised the mission. In a message on Telegram, he called it an “absolutely brilliant” strike. Kyiv said it had used 117 drones in total.

Strategic Airbases Damaged

Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) claimed responsibility for the drone strikes. It said the attacks caused $7 billion in damage to Russian military aircraft. This included strategic bombers and long-range missile platforms.

Targets included the Olenya airbase in Murmansk and the Belaya airbase in Irkutsk, located thousands of kilometres from Ukraine’s border. Reports said at least 41 Russian bombers were hit, including Tu-95 and Tu-22 aircraft.

These bombers have been used to launch missiles at Ukrainian cities. The latest strike is being described as one of the most damaging since the war began over three years ago.

Ukrainian media reported that drones were smuggled into Russia inside trucks and launched from near the targeted airfields. Russia has not confirmed the full extent of the damage.

Rising Tensions as Peace Talks Begin

While the strikes stunned Russia, Ukraine sent a delegation to Istanbul on Monday. Defence Minister Rustem Umerov led the talks, which followed a previous deal in May where both sides exchanged 1,000 prisoners.

Zelenskyy said Ukraine entered the talks demanding a full ceasefire, the return of all prisoners, and the safe repatriation of abducted children.

Russia, however, dismissed Turkey’s idea of leader-level talks and instead pushed its own peace terms. Monday’s meeting, reportedly encouraged by U.S. President Donald Trump, ended without a breakthrough.

Meanwhile, drone warfare has intensified on both sides. Russia launched over 900 kamikaze drones and nearly 100 missiles last week, killing 16 civilians in Ukraine.

In response, Kyiv has increased its own strikes, recently hitting military sites in Tula, Alabuga, and Tatarstan with 800 drones.

Al Jazeera’s reporter in Kyiv called the latest drone offensive a “long-planned and well-executed strike.” It signals Ukraine’s growing capabilities — and its readiness to act even while negotiating peace.

Iran Demands Clarity on US Sanctions in Nuclear Talks

TEHRAN – Iran has asked the United States to clearly explain how sanctions will be lifted if both countries are to agree on a new nuclear deal.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei made the statement on Monday. He spoke just days after the U.S. sent a new proposal on the nuclear programme. However, reports suggest Iran considers the offer weak and may soon reject it.

“The American side has not yet provided the necessary clarity in this regard,” Baghaei said. His comments were shared through the state-run IRNA news agency.

Iran insists that any agreement must include firm details on the end of sanctions. It wants clear mechanisms for how the restrictions will be removed and when.

Read: TikToker Sana Yousuf Shot Dead Outside Islamabad Home

Seven Weeks of Uncertain Talks

The two sides have been in negotiations for over seven weeks. The U.S. wants assurance that Iran’s nuclear work is peaceful. Iran, in turn, wants to lift sanctions that have crippled its economy.

Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei previously warned against trusting Washington. His earlier remarks reflected doubts about the U.S. commitment to ending sanctions fairly.

Iran’s tough stance now echoes Khamenei’s skepticism. Tehran is cautious and wants proof before moving forward.

While the U.S. calls its proposal “acceptable,” Iran is not convinced. Sources say Tehran views it as a “non-starter.”

Deal or Deadlock?

Iran’s demand for details signals a potential deadlock. Officials in Tehran say there can be no agreement without guarantees. They want to know how sanctions will end and what steps the U.S. will take to fulfill its promises.

Esmail Baghaei stressed the need for trust. “We need guarantees about the real end of sanctions,” he said. “This includes when, how, and under what mechanisms.”

Iran’s economy has suffered under U.S. sanctions since the U.S. withdrew from the 2015 nuclear deal in 2018. Restoring an agreement could provide relief to the struggling nation.

In Washington, officials have not yet responded publicly to Iran’s latest demand. But pressure is building on both sides to avoid another collapse in talks.

For now, the future of the nuclear deal remains uncertain. Tehran waits for answers. Washington holds back on details. And the world watches to see who moves next.

Police sources confirmed that she died on the spot. The gunman fled the scene immediately after the attack.

Police Suspect Family Link

Investigators believe the attacker may be someone known to the victim. A police spokesperson said initial findings suggest the killer might be a relative of Sana Yousuf.

dead body of Sana Yousaf

Authorities have collected forensic evidence from the crime scene. “We have begun reviewing CCTV footage from nearby buildings,” the spokesperson added.

The motive is still unclear, but officers are treating it as a possible case of personal enmity. The suspect’s identity has not yet been revealed.

Body Shifted to PIMS, Postmortem Complete

Following the incident, police moved the deceased to Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) for postmortem. The body was handed over to the family after legal procedures were completed.

The investigation is ongoing. Police officials assured the media they are making all efforts to apprehend the suspect.

Gold Prices Surge as US-China Tensions Fuel Safe-Haven Demand

The gold price forecast turned bullish on Monday as geopolitical tensions between the US and China pushed investors toward safe-haven assets. Gold rose over 2.5%, climbing above $3,350 amid growing uncertainty and a weakening US Dollar.

Tariff War Escalates

Market anxiety intensified after US President Donald Trump announced plans to double tariffs on Chinese steel and aluminium from 25% to 50%. The move comes just weeks after a Geneva trade agreement had paused tariff hikes. That deal had reduced US tariffs on Chinese goods to 30% and China’s duties to 10%, also including agreements on critical mineral exports. However, Trump accused China of breaching the deal, saying it had “totally violated” the terms.

China Pushes Back

In response, China’s Ministry of Commerce rejected Trump’s accusations. It called them “groundless” and highlighted US policies that restrict Chinese access to AI chip technology and academic visas. China warned it would take “resolute and forceful measures” if the US escalates its actions.

Weaker Dollar Supports Gold

The renewed trade friction has weighed on the US Dollar, adding strength to Gold. As the greenback loses value, Gold becomes more attractive to investors. The current climate has shifted risk sentiment, with traders turning away from equities and toward precious metals.

Technical Outlook: Testing Key Levels

Gold prices are testing resistance at the top of a symmetrical triangle near $3,350. The 20-day Simple Moving Average (SMA) sits just below at $3,295. With the Relative Strength Index (RSI) climbing to 57, momentum appears to favor the bulls.

A breakout above $3,350 could lead to a retest of May’s peak near $3,431. If momentum continues, prices could aim for the all-time high of $3,500 recorded on April 22.

On the downside, a drop below $3,300 may lead to a retreat toward the 23.6% Fibonacci retracement at $3,291 or further to the 38.6% level near $3,161.

All Eyes on the Next Move

Imran Khan Rejects Lie Detector Test Again Amid May 9 Probe

PTI founder Imran Khan’s polygraph refusal has once again stalled investigations into the May 9 riots case. For the fourth time, Khan declined to undergo a lie detector test at Adiala Jail, even with his legal team present. His decision rests on constitutional grounds, specifically Article 13, which protects individuals from self-incrimination.

Investigators Face a Standstill

On Monday, a Lahore police team led by DSP Asif Javed visited Adiala Jail to conduct a polygraph, photogrammetric, and voice matching test. The delegation included officers from the Punjab Forensic Unit and technical expert Abid Ayub. The tests are part of investigations into 11 FIRs registered in Lahore over the violent events of May 9, 2023.

Despite a court order and prior arrangements, Khan once again refused participation. The jail authorities had formally notified him about the team’s arrival. However, Khan remained firm in his decision and handed over a written statement.

Legal Grounds for Refusal

In his statement, Imran Khan cited Article 13 of the Constitution of Pakistan. This article shields an accused person from being forced to testify or produce evidence that could be used against them. Previously, Khan had conditioned his cooperation on the presence of his lawyers. But even with that condition fulfilled, he refused the tests again.

Test Delay Stalls May 9 Cases

This marks the fourth time Khan has refused polygraph testing. According to sources, without these forensic assessments, investigators face hurdles in verifying the allegations linked to Khan in the May 9 incidents. The police team waited at Adiala Jail for nearly four hours, hoping for a change of mind. Eventually, they returned to Lahore without conducting any tests.

Investigation in Limbo

With Imran Khan standing firm on his legal rights, the May 9 probe now hangs in the balance. Investigators may need to explore alternate legal avenues to move the stalled process forward.

Pakistan Engages UNSC Members to Counter India Narrative

Pakistan UNSC diplomacy enters a critical phase today as a high-level delegation, led by Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, begins meetings with 14 of 15 United Nations Security Council (UNSC) member states. These talks come in response to recent tensions with India following a deadly terror attack in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK).

Key Diplomatic Push

The Pakistani team includes top political figures such as Senator Sherry Rehman, Hina Rabbani Khar, Dr Musadik Malik, Khurram Dastgir Khan, Bushra Anjum Butt, Tehmina Janjua, and Jalil Abbas Jilani. They aim to challenge India’s version of events and explain Pakistan’s position on the military confrontation that unfolded in May.

Engaging the Global Community

Beyond the UNSC, the delegation will meet ambassadors from the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and the Non-Aligned Movement. The group will also address the United Nations Correspondents Association (UNCA), along with Pakistani journalists based in New York.

Meanwhile, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister Syed Tariq Fatemi will lead a separate delegation to Moscow starting today, further expanding Pakistan’s diplomatic outreach.

Missed Media Opportunities

However, no official plans have been announced for meetings with American media outlets, human rights watchdogs, or organisations that combat disinformation. This gap has raised concerns about missed opportunities to influence broader global opinion, especially in the West.

The diplomatic campaign follows Pakistan’s military response, “Operation Bunyan-um-Marsoos”, launched after the IIOJK attack. The conflict ended in a U.S.-brokered ceasefire on May 10, with Pakistan reporting 53 fatalities, including 13 military personnel.

A Decade of Impact

Maxwell explained that physical challenges influenced his decision. “I felt like I was letting the team down a little bit with how my body was reacting,” he said on the Final Word Podcast. “I had a good chat with George Bailey, and I told him I wouldn’t make it to the 2027 World Cup. It’s time for someone else to step into this role.”

Leaving on His Terms

Maxwell emphasized he never wanted to continue “for selfish reasons.” However He believes Australia is heading in a clear direction and hopes his exit opens space for new talent to prepare for the future.

George Bailey praised Maxwell’s contribution, calling him “one of the most dynamic players” in ODI history. Though he’s stepping away from the 50-over format, Maxwell remains a key figure in Australia’s T20 plans for the year ahead.

Mohammad Haris century powered Pakistan to a dominant seven-wicket victory over Bangladesh in the third T20I, completing a 3-0 series whitewash at Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore. Haris remained unbeaten on 107 off just 46 balls, steering Pakistan to a 197-run target with 16 balls to spare.

Govt Prioritises Key Projects Amid Budget Cuts, Ahsan Iqbal Confirms

Facing a limited development budget 2025 of Rs880 billion, Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal announced that the government will focus only on high-value, strategic projects in the next fiscal year. This shift aligns with IMF’s fiscal discipline demands and aims to ensure value for money in public spending.

Tight Resources, Tough Choices

At the Annual Plan Coordination Committee meeting in Islamabad, Iqbal highlighted that the development budget had shrunk due to past borrowing and high inflation. Loan repayments now consume 55% of spending, leaving limited fiscal space for new initiatives.

Budget Breakdown and Priorities

Of the Rs1 trillion overall Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP), Rs120 billion has been set aside to upgrade Balochistan’s N-25 Highway into an expressway. The remaining Rs880 billion will fund infrastructure projects, especially in energy, water, and transport.

Special areas like Gilgit-Baltistan, AJK, and merged districts of KP will receive Rs63bn and Rs70bn respectively. Science and IT projects will get Rs53bn, and Rs9bn is reserved for institutional reforms.

Shifting Focus to Completion and Strategic Value

The minister stressed that projects near completion (70–80%) will receive major funding to avoid delays and added costs.

Reforming the PSDP Approach

To ease federal strain, development responsibilities will shift to provincial governments. Iqbal noted that from 12% in 2013, provincial projects now make up 40% of PSDP—a trend the Centre plans to reverse.

Driving Growth and Exports

The government forecasts 4.2% GDP growth, led by agriculture (4.5%), industry (4.3%), and services (4%). However Export targets are set at $35 billion, with remittances expected to rise from $27bn to $37bn. Iqbal praised overseas Pakistanis for their continued support.

Calls for Tax Reform

Iqbal called Pakistan’s 10% tax-to-GDP ratio “unsustainable” and urged the nation to treat tax reform as a top security priority. To reduce reliance on loans, revenue collection must expand drastically.

He also flagged 118 low-priority projects worth Rs1,000bn for possible freezing or closure to save critical resources.

PM Pushes for Transparent FBR Reforms with Global Validation

In a firm push toward FBR digital reforms, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday directed the government to engage top international firms for third-party validation of ongoing tax reform initiatives. The move aims to boost transparency and ensure sustainable progress within Pakistan’s revenue system.

Focus on Transparency and Performance

Chairing a high-level review meeting in Islamabad, the prime minister emphasized that credible external validation would help build public trust in the Federal Board of Revenue’s transformation. He expressed satisfaction over the success of the Faceless Customs Assessment System, calling it a step toward a more efficient and corruption-free tax structure.

PRAL’s Role in Reform

The premier praised the performance of Pakistan Revenue Automation Limited (PRAL), noting its vital contribution to modernizing tax operations. He said PRAL’s systems have not only improved revenue collection but also significantly reduced customs clearance times, easing trade procedures and supporting economic growth.

Advancing Digital Taxation

The meeting also reviewed efforts to expand digital taxation across the country. Officials discussed developing taxpayer-friendly platforms, especially in Urdu and other regional languages. The goal is to make tax filing accessible for all citizens, regardless of their technical skills or language barriers.

Economic Stability Linked to Reforms

Prime Minister Sharif reaffirmed his government’s commitment to economic stability through long-term institutional reform. He pointed to recent positive economic indicators as evidence that the current strategy is delivering results. These include improvements in revenue collection and investor confidence.

Broad Participation in Policy Review

The session included input from key government officials, including Law Minister Azam Nazir Tarar, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar, the FBR chairman, and senior members of the finance and revenue departments. Their presence signaled strong political and administrative backing for the reform agenda.

By anchoring reforms in transparency, digital innovation, and global best practices, the government aims to modernize the FBR and position Pakistan for sustained economic resilience.
