The National Weather Forecasting Center (NWFC) has warned of heavy rain, thunderstorms, and snowfall in Pakistan’s northern regions, urging citizens to take precautions. A westerly wave is moving across the country, affecting western parts first and then upper regions over the next 36 to 48 hours.

The NWFC’s advisory, issued on Sunday, predicts cold and dry conditions across most parts of Pakistan. However, cloudy weather with rain, wind, and thunderstorms is expected in northern and northwestern Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, Kashmir, and parts of Punjab during the evening and night.
. Areas most at risk include Murree, Galliyat, Naran, Kaghan, Chitral, Dir, Swat, Kohistan, Mansehra, Abbottabad, Shangla, Astore, Hunza, Skardu, Neelum Valley, Bagh, Poonch, and Haveli. Travelers and locals are advised to remain alert.

The forecast also warns of landslides and avalanches in hilly areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Kashmir. Authorities are urging caution, particularly for those traveling through these regions. With unstable slopes and heavy snowfall, roads may become dangerous.

This weather event follows last month’s rainfall, which provided some relief after a prolonged drought. The dry spell had severely impacted crops such as wheat and potatoes, increasing concerns about food security.
According to the Pakistan Climate Change Ministry, the country experienced 40% less rainfall than normal between September 1 and January 15. Provinces like Sindh, Balochistan, and Punjab suffered the most, with rainfall deficits between 42% and 52%.
